BRIEFING: 🚨 The Nexus Between Organised Criminality and Supply Chain Logistics in Europe 🚨 While cargo theft has long been a concern for logistics operators, the threat posed by organised crime group (OCGs) to logistics operations is multifaceted. Beyond stealing goods, these groups are increasingly exploiting legitimate logistics networks for activities like human smuggling and drug trafficking. Key logistics hubs such as Rotterdam and Antwerp have become hotspots, where OCGs blend into legal industrial operations. This not only fuels theft but also increases violence and puts legitimate businesses at risk as criminals use the infrastructure for illegal purposes. Cargo Crime is something of a specialist subject, we have always believed that a collaborative approach is truly required to tackle the issue effectively. Security threats are constantly evolving, making the sharing of intelligence and best practice an essential tool in mapping the threat and ensuring suitable measures are in place to safeguard the movement of goods in the supply chain. To this end, Maple have always worked closely with various stakeholder groups from across the transport sector, such as NaVCIS, to help increase awareness of known cargo crime activity. The National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NaVCIS) is the only dedicated policing unit specialising in targeting crime affecting the UK road haulage and freight transport industry, developing and sharing intelligence. The NaVCIS team manages the UK National Freight Crime Database and is supported by a collective of industry partners including the Road Haulage Association (RHA), transport operators and UK insurers. Freight crime costs the UK millions every year and NaVCIS plays a vital role, gathering and analysing national UK cargo crime data, enabling it to identify any trends, support cross-border investigations and prevent crime run by Organised Criminal Gangs (OCGs). In doing so NaVCIS is able to share regular intelligence bulletins and reports with UK law enforcement agencies, trusted partners and their members. Although NaVCIS are an official policing unit, they operate independently and are uniquely funded by the industry. We are pleased to support the good work NaVCIS do as a longstanding sponsor - to learn about the membership visit https://lnkd.in/drGVtq6f #commercialvehicle #freightcrime #supplychain #policing #lawenforcement #partnership #securitysolutions

Cargo Theft in EMEA: Are Germany and the UK Truly the Hotspots? Recent reports from TAPA TIS in August highlight Germany and the UK as leading regions for cargo crime across EMEA. But is this truly reflective of the broader reality, or are these countries simply reporting incidents more diligently than others in the region? The data raises important questions about both the scale of theft and the consistency of reporting across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. What are your thoughts on the factors driving these trends? #supplychainsecurity #cargotheft #TAPA #EMEA #Logistics

🛳️ West P&I Warns of Rising Cocaine Smuggling Risks in Colombia The latest report from West P&I highlights the escalating threat of cocaine smuggling in Colombia, posing a growing risk to shipping interests. With Colombia's cocaine production hitting record highs, smugglers are becoming increasingly aggressive and innovative, putting innocent vessel operators at serious risk. According to Colombia's Dirección Nacional Marítima (DIMAR), smugglers are expanding their targets beyond traditional reefer containers of bananas. In recent years, criminal gangs have developed new techniques, including disguising cocaine within bulk cargoes such as coal. "Drug dealers develop new methods to camouflage drugs within these cargoes every day, managing even to simulate coal texture and shape to traffic drugs without been noticed by security officers or crews," explained West's correspondent in Colombia, A&A Multiprime. Bribery, extortion, and corruption are rampant in smuggling operations, with port personnel and crewmembers often falling victim to these tactics. Port personnel may assist smugglers in accessing containers, while corrupt seafarers may help haul and stow away drugs. Smugglers now commonly stockpile drugs at safehouses near terminals, collaborating with port personnel to bring contraband into facilities, often under cover of darkness. To combat this threat, West advises vessel operators to increase security measures, including extra security guards, night-time searchlights, hull inspections by dive teams before departure, and comprehensive searches of everyone boarding the ship. The potential consequences for operators are severe, with fines of up to $50,000 possible in administrative investigations and the detention of ships and crews in criminal investigations. Crewmembers could face imprisonment ranging from 8 to 20 years if found guilty of smuggling. Stay informed and vigilant to safeguard against the risks posed by cocaine smuggling in Colombian waters. #MaritimeSecurity #RiskManagement #ShippingSafety 🚢💼
