Let's discuss Contingency plans for operations. With over thirty years of experience in shipping and logistics, including expertise in shipping line management, documentation, terminal operating systems (TOS), and port operations, I am eager to discuss a pressing topic relevant in today's heavily system-dependent world. It's imperative to acknowledge our reliance on systems, whether directly or indirectly. While systems offer immense utility and are continually evolving, we must consider the potential vulnerabilities they pose. What happens in the event of a system crash or a cyber-attack? Do we have contingency plans in place to ensure seamless business continuity? Drawing from my background in shipping and port operations, I reflect on the traditional methods of planning yard and vessel operations using manual tools like T-cards and tally sheets. While modern TOS streamline planning processes, they also raise concerns about resilience. Are we adequately prepared to revert to manual procedures during system failures or other disruptions? Are our personnel equipped to operate effectively without relying solely on automated instructions? I advocate for the development of robust fallback strategies, even if it means reverting to paper-based forms and manual data entry. Conducting regular mock drills can enhance staff readiness and cultivate a deeper understanding of each operational step's significance. By fostering a culture of preparedness and accountability, we can mitigate risks and ensure operational resilience.
