Titagarh Rail Systems launches second 25T bollard pull tug for Indian Navy Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) has launched its second 25T bollard pull tug, Bahubali, for the Indian Navy. The ship is built at the company’s facility located in Titagarh, Barrackpore. The launch is part of the six 25 BP tugs order secured by the company in November 2021 from Indian Navy under the Ministry of Defence’s Make in India initiative. The keel laying ceremony for the fourth 25T bollard pull tug, Yuvan (Yard 338), was also conducted after the launch. In a statement from Umesh Chowdhary, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, TRSL, said, “It is a momentous day for us at TRSL; after launching the first tug earlier this year, we have launched the second tug in a record time, which is within just two months of launching the first one. This underscores a substantial milestone in our commitment to bolstering India's naval capabilities, and we are diligently progressing with the remaining vessels to meet the promised timeline.” The 25T BP Tug boasts several key features, enhancing its capabilities for diverse maritime operations. Powered by two robust engines generating 1200 BHP @1800 rpm each, the tug provides formidable thrust for manoeuvring large vessels. The azimuth thrusters enable exceptional manoeuvrability, allowing precise movements in various directions. With a 25-ton bollard pull, the tug can efficiently handle a range of towing tasks. Equipped with an external firefighting system and boasting a commendable 96-hour endurance, the vessel ensures preparedness for emergency conditions. The ship offers the crew members comfortable accommodation, including mess facilities, ensuring extended operational efficiency. Fitted communication and navigation equipment enhance safe navigation and effective coordination with other ships, while the tug's towing configuration versatility includes stern towing and pushing ahead. The frame opening has been enlarged to better accommodate two adults without increasing the overall dimensions. An integrated, yet flexible stainless steel bail retainer has been added to keep the bails from dropping after removing the hoist hook. The frame of the basket is constructed of tubular stainless steel for low maintenance. The bail assembly folds into the basket for compact stowage. The bottom is covered with a detachable-replaceable plastic mesh liner. Basket provides excellent flotation performance and is self-righting with 100% reserve buoyancy. Float covers have reflective markings and are printed with safety pictorials. The basket measures 44-1/2” long x 25” wide x 39” high assembled, and 21” high when stowed. Weight: 39 lbs. Keel laying of the first multi-role corvette celebrated at Rauma The keel of the first Squadron 2020 multi-role corvette was lowered at Rauma shipyard on Thursday 11 April. The traditional keel laying ceremony celebrates in effect the birth of the ship and marks the actual start of construction of the ship’s hull. The keel of a ship and its cradle were lowered on a building trestle inside a construction hall where the ship is being built. As is the tradition, two lucky coins were placed under the ship that will remain there once the ship is completed. Due to national security reasons, the corvettes are being built indoors. This is why outsiders were prohibited from also attending the keel laying ceremony. Present in the ceremony were the ordering party, that is the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, the Finnish Navy, maritime classification society Lloyd’s Reister as well as the Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) management and key employees in the project. “This day celebrates especially the shared work of the entire shipyard. The ship, today only a keel, can be seen as a symbol representing the commitment our shipyard and personnel have towards national defence. Our work has required smooth, extensive and open collaboration between the ordering party and all those connected to the project. The collaboration we have achieved is an asset that will ensure a successful outcome,” Project Director Timo Ståhlhammar It has been five months since the start of construction, and the operative phase has progressed efficiently. The first part of the keel weighs 56 tonnes. The direct impact the Squadron Project has on employment in Finland is approximately 3,600 person-years. RMC is building four Pohjanmaa-class multi role corvettes in total for the Finnish Navy. Multi role corvette is a surface combatant capable of effectively conducting a range of Navy tasks at sea all year round. The high-performance vessels are designed to operate in the Baltic Sea year-round in various circumstances, including also icy and freezing conditions. Royal Canadian Navy commander Vice Admiral Angus Topshee and Defence Minister Bill Blair announced Friday that construction work on the Canadian Surface Combatant Project will begin at Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The company will build the warships and act as prime contractor while Lockheed Martin Canada is providing the design based on the BAE Type 26. The project will see the construction of 15 warships to replace the current fleet of Halifax-class frigates. Topshee said the navy is classifying the new ships as destroyers. ... The construction schedule for Canadian Surface Combatant is lengthy. The first ship will not be delivered until the early 2030s and will then have to undergo testing, senior Canadian government officials said at a June 27 technical briefing. That means it will not be in service with the Royal Canadian Navy until 2035. The schedule will see nine CSC ships delivered by 2040 with the last vessel set to arrive in 2050. A senior government official said getting the new ships as soon as possible is imperative because of ongoing maintenance concerns for the aging Halifax-class frigates. The official also downplayed concerns about the schedule by pointing out that technology improvements will be added along the way, improving the ship capabilities over time. Additional upgrades are also expected for the Halifax-class frigates, the official added. No cost figures or specific details on that work were provided. Alan Williams, the former assistant deputy minister for materiel at National Defence, noted that the CSC design has still not been completed and the final budget has yet to be determined. “Combine that with a delivery schedule stretching over decades and you have a recipe for disaster,” he said. Williams has warned that the cost of the CSC, combined with the cost of Canada’s F-35 procurement as well as modernization of radars and other systems used by North American Aerospace Defense Command, will leave little funds left for other major procurements. The CSC project is budgeted at between CAD $56-60 billion, according to the Department of National Defence. But a separate examination of the project conducted in 2022 by Yves Giroux, the Parliamentary Budget Officer, put the cost figure at CAD $84 billion. The Department of National Defence expects to have a final cost figure for the ships by the end of this year or in early 2025. ... An implementation contract for the project is expected to be signed by the end of this year, which will allow for full-rate production of the ships. That full-rate production is expected to start in 2025. ..."
