A heartfelt thank you to My HR Pros, Fort Smith Regional Alliance, and City of Van Buren, Arkansas for supporting my participation in Community Development Institute (CDI) Central this week! I wanted to share 10 of the most impactful things I learned in Year 1: 1. A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader. A great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves! 2. People don’t want to work where they don’t want to live. 3. Everyone has a voice and everyone has a role in their community. 4. Collaborative problem solving + respectful dialogue + diversity of opinion = transformative change 5. Data gives your story strength. 6. Your downtown is what your community thinks of itself. 7. 3 critical, often missed steps in volunteer management: increase responsibilities and growth opportunities, recognition and celebration, and exiting volunteers gracefully. 8. If my community is above average I can expect to live above the average lifespan. 9. Every leader needs to know 5 good things about their community. 10. What can you repurpose in your community to give you an advantage? Our keynote speaker was from the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute! She shared that moving to Petit Jean was the sunrise of Rockefeller’s dreams. I relate to that so much! I strongly encourage every community leader to consider participating in CDI. If you have any questions about the nationwide program, please let me know!

We are unique in our approach, fighting poverty using a community-based model that values relationship and opportunity. We hold closely to the belief that we can all learn from each other, regardless of status, race, or social position. Through taking time to build relationships that move beyond the traditional helper-helpee dynamic, we seek to restore dignity to people who live in now-struggling communities. The experts in a community are those who are living there, taking part in the life of the neighborhood every single day. We want to serve alongside those experts, empowering them to lead the way in bringing about lasting change and through creating access to opportunities for education or employment. Our vision is that people live in neighborhoods full of opportunity, know and serve their neighbors, and are invited into gospel-centered community. Our goals are to develop people and communities holistically, empower impoverished and underserved people to grow and develop in all aspects of their lives, and work alongside individuals to inspire and develop indigenous leadership. To accomplish these goals, we focus on:

Parks, with their incredible social opportunities, are pivotal in nurturing stronger, more connected communities. They act as 'third spaces,' facilitating social interaction and fostering positive behaviors like cooperation and compassion. In a time when social isolation is on the rise and trust in institutions is declining, parks emerge as a crucial solution. By creating and maintaining well-designed, accessible parks, we can bridge social divides, build trust, and encourage civic engagement. Our community parks and recreation programs leverage these social superpowers to unite people, nurture connections, and strengthen the social fabric. Let's continue advocating for expanding and improving our community parks and recreation services to ensure everyone can access these invaluable resources. #ParksMakeLifeBetter #ParksAndRecreation #CommunityBuilding #SocialSuperpowers #CivicEngagement This post draws on insights from Howard Frumkin's article, 'Parks have social superpowers. Let's make more of them': https://lnkd.in/eKqmBZhS

One of my favorite parts of building communities has nothing to do with the following: 1. Increasing monthly active users 2. Growing our community member count 3. Driving our revenue goals Must we care about those things? Yes, for sure. But is that what gets me excited every morning? Honestly, not really. It's discovering and connecting with amazing people like Megan Lebeda that does it for me. People who pour their heart into *something*, especially when that something is uplifting and transforming their own communities. Let me share with you what I see: In her day job, Megan is constantly looking for ways to forge connections between various industry experts and the larger Kirkwood Community College community of learners (i.e., the entire Eastern Corridor of Iowa), providing Iowans access to meaningful professional development resources, experiences, and connections they might not otherwise have. When she's not being a Hummingbirds supporting local businesses, you can find her taking leadership roles in local organizations like Central Furniture Rescue—a nonprofit that provides furniture and other household items to individuals and families facing difficult transitions under challenging circumstances (link in comments!). No, the coolest thing about community has nothing to do with me or our community. It's meeting and connecting with folks you simply admire. If we can't find that connection with our members, I suggest we take a break from the dashboards and find our Megans. They're out there. #community #cmx

Head of Design, Experience Strategy, Product Design Leader, Creative Strategy, Visionary, Design for Good, Team Activator, Speaker
Hi network! I was recently introduced to Teach Access who just became a Classy customer (thanks Clara Edwards for the intro). The intersection of education and accessibility is one I am really passionate about. As a leader in product design and a mother of two daughters, I am deeply passionate about programs that promote accessibility in education. My professional journey has ingrained in me the importance of creating solutions that are inclusive and empower all individuals to reach their potential and this extends into my personal life. These initiatives not only open doors for individuals but also enrich our society by cultivating a diverse and talented workforce equipped to address the complex challenges of tomorrow. Today I met with Mindy Kolin as I'm interested in volunteering, working with Teach Access to bring awareness to their cause. Because opening doors up to the education piece for students has such a ripple affect! Teach Access's goal is to: Teach Access provides free programs and resources to help students and educators in the higher education community with the intention of creating accessibility-infused college curricula for students. I'm thinking about close professors at University of Washington Julie Kientz or my alma matter Washington State University or if anyone in my network is interested in a corporate sponsorship with Teach Access as well. Let's build a society with a diverse, talented workforce ready to tackle the future’s big challenges-- it's important.

Founder/CEO Social Capital Builders. Recognized innovator and pioneer advancing economic mobility and impact through social capital education and social network analysis.
Colleagues, I'm reaching out personally because I'm deeply committed to a mission that feels more urgent now than ever. With DEI and affirmative action efforts facing increasing challenges, there's a real fear that the opportunity gap for underrepresented communities might widen further. To combat this, it's crucial we empower individuals to be their own affirmative action. At Social Capital Builders, we're focusing on how social capital can bridge this gap. However, understanding and utilizing social capital extends beyond just job seekers. It requires a concerted effort from professionals like you to reach beyond usual networks and connect with those often overlooked. This is where our survey comes into play. We're exploring how individuals in professional settings can better share their social capital, making a significant difference in the lives of others and, ultimately, in the fabric of our society. Your insights are invaluable to this mission. Could you spare about 8 minutes to take this survey and share it with your colleagues? Every response moves us closer to a more inclusive and connected future. We're aiming for 300 responses, and your participation would mean a lot to me and those we aim to support. Here's the link to the survey: [https://lnkd.in/eAQ8z-rQ] Thank you so much for considering this request. Your support could be the catalyst for meaningful change.
