Last year, I was in a shambolic situation due to the office I found myself in, which made me dedicate little time to myself and my brand. I dedicated just 50 hours to my clients throughout the entire year! Its a small amount, but then I know I can do more for my clients. Before that, I took a break and did some serious reflection. I found myself questioning: ➡️The direction my business was heading ➡️What my next steps should be ➡️How to recover after losing two clients in 2023 due to the cost of living crisis After experimenting with different platforms I started: ➡️Mastering how to use LinkedIn properly ➡️Expanding my network and building valuable relationships ➡️Actively reaching out and connecting with new people ➡️Putting myself out there consistently to attract the right clients Eventually, I started getting recommendations to work with others, and things began to fall into place. Let me tell you a secret: you could be doing the right things but not enough of it to matter. Picture this: you go to the gym every day but only spend 30 seconds on the treadmill and see zero results. Similarly, you could run hard once a month and still find yourself out of shape. Success takes both consistency and commitment. Without it, you may think you’re doing the wrong things when really you're just not doing enough of the right things to see results. Whether you are creating content, releasing products, or attending networking events Make sure you are doing enough to move the needle. Choose your path, attack it with passion and don’t stop. P.S. Series: Jordy Talks Career Development😊📝 Welcome back to the fourth installment of my Career Development series where I share my personal experiences and insights gained along my career journey. This week, let's tackle the misconception, "Professionals can’t be creative." That statement may sound strange to some of you. Others may completely understand what I mean. Comment below which camp you fall into. I was talking to a friend a few months ago about entrepreneurship. He noted how being an entrepreneur requires one to “step outside the mold”. We talked about how the education system molds individuals to conform, and as a result, suppresses their creative nature. However, entrepreneurship is about innovation and therefore requires one to take risks, think creatively, and go against the grain. This resonated deeply with me, prompting me to question, “Why can’t professionals be creative” or “Why can't creativity and professionalism be compatible?” Upon further reflection, I realized I have always felt dissuaded from embracing my creative side and pursuing a creative career. I spent many years suppressing my creativity, only letting it out in the “right spaces” such as art & music class, during theater, in my creative writing assignments, and behind the closed door of my childhood room. In those spaces, creativity was appropriate. However, when deciding which profession I wanted to pursue, I left creativity behind. To me, professionalism and creativity inhabited different worlds. It wasn’t until I heard of Social Media Marketing that my mind was opened to a world where the two realities could coexist. While I am still exploring this field, I have never felt more like myself. This field gives me hope, hope for a future where creatives can become more mainstream, be embraced as professionals, and have the innovative influence they were always meant to have on society. The professional world needs creatives, and I look forward to being one as a social media manager. Embracing Mistakes: A Lesson from My Life Early in my marketing career, I made a mistake that taught me a valuable lesson about networking and success. Attending a networking event, I tried too hard to impress, focusing on self-promotion rather than genuine connection. It felt like a missed opportunity as I failed to build authentic relationships. Instead of cribbing on the mistake, I saw it as a wake-up call. I learned that effective networking is about offering value and building meaningful connections. I shifted my approach to listening more, asking genuine questions, and providing support where possible. This change in mindset made a significant impact. By prioritizing authentic connections over self-promotion, I cultivated valuable collaborations and opportunities in my marketing journey. …guess where I spent the morning?! Only at my favourite plaaaaaace 😃💙 A great couple of hours spent sharing and learning with a fabulous group of #eventprofs, Céline Laukemann at the helm. And - of course - we picked up a few LinkedIn tips along the way! One of my favourite learnings was from Elinor Honigstein, as she shared with us her very well-informed perspective on the three different LinkedIn mindsets we should all consider channeling whenever we post. 1. 🌟 The Visionary 🌟 The Visionary is all about thought leadership and industry focus. When in this mindset, you should leverage original commentary around your work and industry, as well as sharing relevant supporting resources. 2. 🪽 The Evangelist 🪽 The Evangelist is a company content or brand focused mindset. This is when you might post company announcements, products or service updates. Keep your network up to date with what is happening at your business. 3. 📒 The Mentor 📒 Probably my favourite, the Mentor will often be sharing career advice or posts that may seem non-work related on the surface. In this mindset, you might post about a book you read, a trip you took and how it inspired you, lessons learnt outside of your working environment, and your unique interests and experiences. So when you’re posting on LinkedIn, think about which of these mindsets you want to channel, and choose to be either a Visionary, an Evangelist or a Mentor. Every single time. Bloody love that stuff.
