Take 1: Time for some afternoon reading material for #AnosmiaAwarenessDay. About 1 in 10,000 people are born without the ability to smell, called congenital anosmia, yet finding the cause is elusive. Monell Chemical Senses Center scientists and colleagues sequenced the protein-coding parts of the entire genome in members of 10 families and 141 other individuals with one type of congenital anosmia. From this they identified a list of rare variants in 158 genes, some of which are associated with the sense of smell. For example, they confirmed that the gene CNGA2 is an essential component of the neural pathway governing the ability to smell. Perhaps this basic science can lead to better diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment for people with congenital anosmia.
