Over the years, I’ve seen a recurring challenge that many businesses face—everyone has these aspirations to get to the top and be the most successful. Yet, the path to success is often misunderstood. The Navy Seals have a saying: "Everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die." To me, this underscores the importance of investing in oneself and striving to reach the next level. Think about it: if you want to be a leading boxer, you get a boxing coach. If you want to get on stage and be a bodybuilder, you get a bodybuilding coach. For any skill—whether it's football, driving F1, or speaking a new language—you get a coach. Since day one, I’ve had mentors for marketing, sales, mental management, and personal training. There’s a notion of being self-made, doing it all yourself, but that’s not the way forward anymore. Investing in training is crucial. Investing in training raises a firm's survival performance rate massively and promotes loyalty within the business because people know they’ve been invested in. With a robust training process in place, the candidate pool expands significantly. The pool of qualified estimators, project managers, and salespeople in the roofing industry is small—whether in Glasgow, London, California, New York, or Florida. However, if you can onboard and train people quickly, your candidate pool grows exponentially. It's always surprising to me that more firms don't have these training systems in place. The best way to recruit is to hire based on personality and train for skills. My goal is to educate roofing firms on the importance of investing in training their employees. This approach not only addresses the skills shortage but also fosters a culture of growth and loyalty within the business. By building comprehensive training systems, we can ensure that our industry continues to thrive and attract top talent. “THERE’S NO MORE GOOD SUPERVISION OUT THERE” - CONTRACTORS “WRONG!” - ME One thing that has always stood out to me is the LACK of young, talented individuals eager to step into leadership roles today. I often see young guys with the “I just wanna do my 8 and go home” mindset. It was never like this with the “older generation”, so what’s happening now? On top of that I recently read there is a labor shortage upwards to 650,000, and currently needed in the construction industry. Here’s a few of my thoughts as to the “WHY”… - Industries are no longer willing to compensate leadership appropriately to bear the responsibility of the projects. Short Answer - No incentives - Mentorship programs aren’t utilized properly or are almost non existent. Low morale. Short Answer - No Leadership Guidance - Micromanagement from personnel who have little to no field knowledge/experience. Short Answer - Lack of Trust - Poor workplace culture, on site and company wide. Short Answer - Not valued (worker) Contractors, Unions, Developers ect may not want to admit this. But each and everything mentioned above is your responsibility to fix and … EFFECTING YOUR BOTTOM LINE. (Money) If all the above is true to my knowledge. WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO BE IN CONSTRUCTION?! The worker is critical to your success and revenue stream. So why not do whats best for your (fill in the blank) and …… FIX THE PROBLEM! And that’s what I’m here to help you with. . . . I understand that accepting your “business” is part of the problem can be hard to come to terms with. But this is THE FIRST STEP in the right direction, and to greater financial success. That moment shared when everyone turns up at 6AM and the client is delighted!! 🤣 We've all been there right? Especially those of you who work in Logistics / Industrial recruitment. I was thinking about the stick England have been getting lately and I tried to think of it from a different perspective. Obviously, with the skill available in the team, we want them to be more flamboyant, pass the ball, create chances, be aggressive with their style of play and not play on our mental frustrations quite as much as they have. However – if the end result is success, does it actually matter how you got there? Think about recruitment in 2022 – huge lack of candidates, especially skilled ones. Clients ended up having to at times, taking what they could and persevere with the team regardless. The goal was the same but the method wasn’t what we wanted. However, by pushing, working hard and staying committed, the goal was achieved. Was it pretty? Was it done with style and charisma? NO Did everyone get to the end result? YES I am one of the 50 million England managers but sometimes, we need to celebrate small victories on the way. Now, shall we take a moment to celebrate an overhead kick with 30 seconds to go? Teaching employees to drop scarcity mindset is work however it's worth it. I was in the Navy, I relate. There were limited promotions, billets (places to serve), capped salaries and very few bonuses. Well those days are over. In an entrepreneur platform within a multi-multi-multi trillion industry, it's grow, lead, scale. As a country, America still provides an arena for competitors to step outside there comfort zone. The only limits are those we place on ourselves.
