Whenever someone I work with gets hired I say... Now is the time to focus on your role AND start building your network. Most executives get so busy with their actual jobs that they forget to network when they secure a job. It's a hell of a lot easier to have conversations when you're employed than unemployed because the other person knows you don't have an agenda. If you're starting to ping people for coffee chats and networking conversations after you've been laid off, you're too late! Be prepared to lose your job. Always be networking and build your circle of influence. Help others so that when you need it (we all do at some point) you'll have a list of people volunteering to help you too and they'll 'owe you one' This: "It was really nice to meet you a couple of months back and I remember speaking to you about XYZ. I am thinking about my next role right now and was wondering if you'd be willing to refer me to role X at your company?" Is much easier and more effective than: "Hey, my name is X and we've never spoken before but would you be willing to have a first conversation and then potentially refer me to a role in your company?" It doesn't take more than 1-2 hours a month. Control and accelerate your job search before it even starts. 🌐 **Navigating the Shifting Tides of Recruitment: A Reflection** 🌐 In the era of the pandemic, it was customary for candidates to engage with recruiters directly on LinkedIn. This practice, once considered normal, facilitated swift communication and project implementation. Fast forward to the current job market, characterized by crises, mass layoffs, and a surplus of candidates seeking opportunities in project management and recruitment. From my personal journey, I've noticed a significant transformation. In my months-long job search, I've shifted my focus towards direct contact. However, the prevailing market conditions seem to have altered the dynamics. The more the job market deteriorates, the more I perceive a reluctance among recruiters to engage with candidates directly. There's a prevailing sentiment that reaching out directly makes an applicant appear desperate or intrusive. Yet, how can one not feel a sense of urgency after months of job hunting, with familial and financial responsibilities? I firmly believe that the act of reaching out independently should not diminish the value, skills, or knowledge of a candidate. In fact, it's an endeavor to stand out amidst a sea of CVs, a proactive approach in challenging times. On this note, I'd like to echo an observation shared by others navigating similar paths. In these challenging times, recruiters can play a pivotal role by acknowledging the courage and determination it takes for candidates to initiate direct contact. Each message tells a story of resilience, encompassing the challenges of unemployment, family obligations, and financial pressures. Embracing direct communication is not just about connecting with a CV; it's about understanding the person behind it. Recruiters have the opportunity to contribute to a more compassionate and human-centric hiring process. In a job market saturated with resumes, recognizing the personal journey of each applicant can lead to discovering exceptional talent that might have otherwise been overlooked. Let's not forget that, in times of crisis, a compassionate approach to recruitment goes beyond filling job vacancies; it positively impacts the lives of job seekers and contributes to building a more empathetic and resilient professional community. 💕 I've debated making this post for at least a fortnight...🤍 🤔 But since one of my recent posts caused confusion, allow me to put the jokes aside and assemble some of the missing puzzle pieces. 💿 ✉ A little over a month ago I was thrown into one of the worst job markets my industry has ever seen. How did it end? The aftermath is still ringing in my head, but I'll always have the memories and my eternal consolation prize. 📜 💔 I've read countless posts of candidates in dire straights, whether they're facing endless months of unemployment, or a toxic work environment they feel is inescapable, and debating whether or not to put up the green banner for fear they would be looked upon as "desperate". 😿 ❕ The harsh truth is two-fold... ❕ ✅ Pro: it does make you more visible to recruiters and shows your immediate interest and availability. *Don't do this if you're still employed, there is a second hidden feature you can use for "recuiters only" ❌ Con: there will always be those recruiters and HM's who have a bias against OTW candidates versus poaching actively working candidates. It's incorrect and prejudicial, but it's another thing you will be up against. Also, do you really want to work in a place where that could be indicative of other systemic issues anyway? That's for you to decide based on the urgency of your situation. 💚 With recent mass layoffs, and certain companies showing less and less of a regard for how they throw away top talent, it makes no sense to determine a candidate's eligibility based on their current employment status. 🤦♀️ 💡 Overall, however, I don't think this is even close to the most important thing you can be doing in your job search to get on companies' radar. Day 20 of my unemployment journey 🕵♀️ <-- This is me searchin for my next role. I have been treating this job search like a full time job. Day in and day out searching for roles for myself and friends that were also impacted by layoffs. I have been consistently applying, getting phone screens, interviews, and rejection emails. It is a grind, but it does teach you a thing or two about yourself. How do you rise from the ashes? How do you deal with rejection? How do you show your resilience? 🔎Should I tell a recruiter that I am unemployed?🔎 Generally, I do not think it is a good idea to lie about your employment status. As long as you explain your current circumstances! 🔎Do recruiters prefer employed candidates?🔎 I can only speak for myself, but I always look for the best fit for the role- regardless of employment status. In fact, the possibility of an immediate start is often appealing for roles which need to be filled urgently. 🔎If I applied when I was still employed, but now I am unemployed- when should I disclose that?🔎 Again, being honest is the best policy. I would say as soon as possible. I once had a candidate not disclosing their departure & I found out by emailing their work email- only to be met with an automated reply. Whilst, this has not affected their candidacy, I felt it affected the trust between us. 🔎If I got laid off, should I lie on my resume that I am still employed?🔎 Lying on your resume is a bad idea. There is no shame about being laid off. The reality is that nearly everyone and every industry has been affected by layoffs recently. Can we talk about gaps, jumpiness and stagnant career paths on resumes for a minute? Many years ago (ok maybe just like 7-10 years ago), there were a couple of red flags every recruiter and hiring manager was training to look for…. 🚩 Is there a gap on their resume (aka they weren't working) 🚩 Have they changed jobs in less than two years 🚩 Have they been at the same level for more than 3-5 years (especially people earlier in their careers) Assumptions were made (and sometimes fairly) that this meant someone wasn't as strong a candidate. That they were just going after whatever new carrot was given to them in the job market, that they weren't loyal or invested, they weren't hirable (or great performers), or they were not invested in their careers. I get it, it was a different world back then. And there was some truth to it. You want someone who is committed to your company and team. You want someone who is actively engaged in their field. You want someone who has a strong background, who has invested in their skills and development. You want someone who is driven. But let me tell you a secret...2020 changed all of that. ✅ People had to opt out of the workforce to take care of family ✅People were laid off (and sometimes they have been through a couple of layoffs) with the turbulent economy ✅ People left companies or roles they were not invested in to take time to reflect on what they wanted in their careers ✅ People got burned out and needed to take a break for their own health ✅ People dialed back their work for many reasons ✅ People took jobs they could get because of the turbulent economy ✅ Companies held back promotions due to budget constraints or layoffs limited internal opportunities So I encourage all the recruiters and hiring managers out there to have a more open mind about people's backgrounds. We aren't saying ignore them. I am just saying to give people a chance. If they have the skills and experiences you are looking for but have times they weren't working, short stints at companies or flatter career growth, talk to them! Schedule a call and ask them about their career, find out the stories behind the "flags". Then make a judgement to see if those stories hold water or if they are excuses masking a legit concern. But just remember what the last four years have been like and give people some grace and a chance to share their reasons. And, candidates, let's be honest - you know these questions are coming! So be ready. It's ok to note on your resume that you took a break, or that you were impacted by a layoff. The more you can proactively tell your story, the less a recruiter has to guess or assume. And we all know that with a lack of information, people will always assume the worst. So take control of your narrative and get ahead of those concerns. Share your stories ⤵️ about when you have someone a chance (or someone gave you a chance!) and it led to a great hire!

People are starting to change jobs and that’s huge news for jobseekers. The past 2 years have been some of the most challenging in the job market, with many companies laying off thousands of employees and cutting all hiring. This has led to one of the toughest period for jobseekers because not only were there less jobs available, but they were now competing with over qualified individuals impacted by layoffs. Whenever the job market has been uncertain, it naturally leads to less jumps because of uncertainty of the job market. My timeline the past few weeks have been flooded with people changing roles to new companies or industries which could be an indication that there is a perceived sentiment of job stability in the market. While we are a long way from pre-covid hiring booms, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for jobseekers. #JobHuntLikeARecruiter
