A year ago, I embarked on a new adventure with Compass Group USA, moving from operations to HR, with a focus on learning, talent and corporate HR. In many ways, it’s hard to believe a full year has gone by and in others, I find myself thinking has it really only been a year? In my 10 years with Compass, I’ve been able to experience multiple sectors of the business, spend time on more than 70 campuses, connect with hundreds of colleagues, build relationships with leaders across the globe and connect teams and people to resources, ideas and projects to support our business. I’m certain that 2013 me could not have predicted my journey and yet it feels as though I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. I’ve learned so much this last year and I’m incredibly grateful to work with the best team in the organization, who challenge me in all the best ways. I still remember that nervous, anxious, excited feeling as I walked into the office last year and while I might be less anxious and nervous, I’m as excited as ever about what we are building and how we are impacting the experience for our people across the organization. I’m also thankful that my career with Compass not only started with a call from Cindy Noble but has led me to being part of her team in this role. Throughout my career, I have learned that understanding and mastering the art of appreciation is crucial. It's essential to appreciate the person, not just the task. When we focus solely on the tasks completed, we offer the lowest form of appreciation - don't get me wrong, this is better than nothing but if we can do better, why not? Instead, valuing individuals for their unique contributions and character elevates their sense of worth and belonging. It's not just about saying "thank you" or "good job." Appreciation comes in many forms, and true leaders know how to tailor it to what resonates most with each individual. But what does that look like? For some, it's about being entrusted with significant projects; for others, it's receiving heartfelt, personalized praise. Forms of appreciation include: 📌 Personalized acknowledgment, “You make a difference, you matter to me” or "Your ability to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions is invaluable.
