Fantastic resource here if you want to know more about writing text descriptions in the most helpful way. Some good reminders: Remember that text descriptions aren't just for websites - they can be added on social media platforms too, as alt text and image descriptions at the end of a post (particularly useful when uploading videos and the alt text option might not be available). Screen readers cannot read images of text. Better to have the text content in the html and provide alt text or an image description in the caption area for social media. Descriptions of diagrams and infographics can be really confusing. It's quite likely that instead of a diagram you could convey the same information in a bullet point list. And a final point as I've noticed this a lot over on Twitter (nope, I'm still not calling it 'X'): Alt text is not an opportunity to back up sarcastic posts. For example writing something like 'Here's my tidy desk', when the picture is actually a very messy desk.

“How do I write good image deceptions and alt text?” Well, I’m glad you asked! The BBC has you covered with our new guidance, published yesterday. Johny Cassidy FRSA has been working hard behind the scenes to create guidance on this and I’m pleased to say that, for the first time, the BBC have published detailed good practice guidance on how to write good, effective, meaningful and impartial descriptions for images. This is done in the hope of increasing accessibility and inclusion for blind and visually impaired people, and to demonstrate real commitment and value for all from the BBC in sharing this good practice. I’m sure if you have questions Johny will be only too pleased to help. In the meantime, happy reading and writing! #DisabilityInclusion #Disability #DisabilityEmployment #Adjustments #DiversityAndInclusion #Content
