🌟 A fantastic day at the AI for Good #ITUaiSummit in #Geneva! Incredibly inspiring to hear from leaders in #AI across #academia, #publicsector, #industry, and the #UN family! A few take-home points: 💡 Doreen Bogdan-Martin emphasized the need for more effort in achieving #SDG targets, highlighting the importance of the use of inclusive and beneficial AI for all. Safety and trust are crucial, necessitating standards to combat misinformation. 💡 I loved Azeem Azhar discussing the importance of a compelling narrative for public acceptance of AI and #human #augmentation in an era of exponential technologies and transitions. That resonates well with the everyday exponential #risk challenges we are helping to solve at Moody's Corporation! I then joined a technical breakout session on AI for the Future of Climate Prediction, where several experts shared their insights. 🧠 Torsten Hoefler 🇨🇭 showed how to combine physics and data for effective climate simulations, discussed ways to address data sparsity and the need to transition legacy codes to scalable GPU systems. Ah, #Fortran endures... fond recollections of my own PhD days, 20 years ago! 🧠 Christian Lessig highlighted AI's capacity to improve mid-range weather forecasts. Testing suggests algorithms adeptly grasp some aspects of #climate physics, demonstrating generalization even with much fewer parameters than recent #LargeLanguageModels. And for extreme events too. Of interest for our #insurance #industry! 🧠 Thomas Brunschwiler discussed developing AI forecast emulators and geospatial foundational models using spatiotemporal #transformers for e.g., flood and urban #heat islands identification. 🧠 Yifang Ban talked about detecting rapid urban building evolution and early detection of #flood and #wildfire using multi-sensor data with transformers and transfer learning. 🤝Monique Kuglitsch and Elena Xoplaki shared that over the past three years, the FG-AI4NDM, convened by #ITU, #WMO, and #UNEP, has established AI standards for #natural #disaster management. They plan to expand through the Horizon-funded MedEWSa project, applying AI for decision support, multi-hazard forecasting, impact assessment, #risktransfer, and outreach. 🚀 Noura E., Erik van Ingen, and Thomas Basikolo announced the AI for Climate Action Innovation Factory, a start-up pitching competition organized by UN agencies, including the ITU, #IAEA, and #FAO. This initiative aims to leverage AI for climate change mitigation, with top solutions showcased at #COP29. Goal is to accelerate AI-driven climate solutions, promote capacity building, and ensure accessible advancements for all stakeholders. Now heading for day two!
