The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently found expired imported chocolates, including several lots of Hershey’s hoarded with a local trader in Delhi. The same were meant for and some had already been sold in Delhi markets by using chemicals to re-do the labels on them. The traders had been repackaging and selling the expired chocolates to the public. Importantly, it is seen from the Court’s order, that as FSSAI had not sealed the trader’s premises immediately after inspection, chocolates of other brands were taken out of the premises by the trader before it was finally sealed 2 weeks later. Delhi High Court has directed Delhi Police to conduct a thorough investigation in the matter and submit a status report in this regard. Several media outlets are reporting a disturbing incident in Mumbai that underscores the importance of food safety, particularly for online food orders. Dr. Brendan Ferrao, a resident of Malad, had a horrifying experience when he discovered a foreign object in his ice cream cone, which he had ordered through an online food delivery app. While enjoying his butterscotch ice cream, Dr. Ferrao bit into something unexpected and fortunately did not consume it. Upon closer inspection, he discovered a human fingernail attached to a human finger. One can only imagine the horror he must be experiencing. Thankfully, he raised his voice and shared his experience, also expressing his concerns about the potential contamination of the entire ice cream batch. The object is under further investigation by authorities, and findings will be shared with the public later. The brand name shared by the police officer is reported to be "YUMMO ICE CREAMS". After searching a lot, I couldn't find the concerned BATCH NUMBER. If anyone has information on this, please share it with me, I can add it to the post. This incident serves as a stark reminder that food safety goes beyond just convenience. Food is essential for our health and well-being, not just a commodity to be rushed through production and delivery chains. This incident emphasizes the need for stronger food safety regulations and stricter quality control measures throughout the entire food supply chain, from farm to table. In a recent update, Westlife Foodworld, the largest franchisee of McDonald’s in India, announced that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has verified McDonald’s India's use of 100% real cheese in its products. This confirmation aligns with McDonald’s assertion of using solely authentic cheese without any substitutes or analogues. Moreover, results from tests conducted by an NABL-accredited lab on McDonald’s outlets in the west and south zones further validate the exclusive use of real cheese across its products. This development underscores McDonald’s commitment to quality and compliance with FSSAI standards. According to Section 31(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, all Food Business Operators in India must obtain a license from the FSSAI. The licensing procedure is governed by the Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011. Whether it's manufacturing, storing, transporting, or distributing food, any food business in India needs an FSSAI License or Registration, depending on its scale and operations. Ensuring Food Safety Over the past two years, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has rejected over 1,550 food products for failing to meet safety standards. In FY 2022-23 alone, 1,000 items, including cheese, almonds, milk products, whiskey, dates, apples, coffee, seafood, and chocolates, were flagged. An additional 550 products faced rejection in FY 2023-24. While Indian food items like whole and powdered spices have faced scrutiny for chemical contamination, our Department of Commerce is proactively addressing these concerns by compiling a list of rejected countries and food items to guide future regulatory measures. This highlights the importance of rigorous checks to protect consumers, even from products originating in countries with strict safety regulations. Kudos to FSSAI for its diligent efforts in keeping our food supply safe! #FoodSafety #FSSAI #HealthFirst #ConsumerProtection
