That’s why the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has taken a proactive step towards safeguarding its roads and infrastructure by approving the use of drone technology to provide topographic planimetric mapping data and high-resolution orthophotography. In turn, engineers from PennDOT use the data to implement better drainage. Considered one of the Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon in Arizona is an immense gorge along the Colorado River. More than 6 million visitors per year travel to take in the breathtaking layered bands of red rock. Originally built in 1970, the Transcanyon Waterline supplies water to millions of tourists who come to the Grand Canyon as well as the local communities. Since 2010, there have been over 85 major breaks that have disrupted delivery along the 12.5-mile #water line. The National Park Service selected HDR to design the replacement of the water system. Reaching depths of over a mile and containing some of the earth’s most severe topography, the #GrandCanyon presented many logistical challenges. HDR used drones, capturing visual and point cloud data needed to develop a reality modeling solution to accurately design the upgraded water infrastructure. Providing the information digitally eliminated the expense for manual surveys, saving approximately 1,000 resource hours, and reducing design contingency by approximately 5%. The TCWL replacement is projected for completion in 2027. Once completed the new water delivery system is expected to meet water supply needs for the next 50-plus years, while protecting natural and cultural resources, maintaining the visitor experience, and reducing maintenance requirements. #engineering #infrastructure #realitymodeling #iTwin

We carried out a confined space inspection of a complex tunnel system in a building basement using remote non-invasive technology so no lives were put at risk. Health & safety were very happy with this approach. We used a terrestrial drone which can be operated on both land and water to carry out the inspection. This approach was much safer and more cost effective than traditional techniques. #ConfinedSpaceInspection #tunnelinspection #culverinspection
