At the Colorado Safety Net Collaborative, we often talk about culturally competent care. Culturally competent care is critical to improving outcomes for marginalized populations, but many people still aren’t familiar with what cultural competency entails. Culturally competent healthcare considers a person’s beliefs, culture, values, and background. Providers who offer culturally competent care will personalize healthcare to account for these differences. A person’s background could influence the language they want to use with providers, their preferences around care, their understanding of symptoms and conditions, and who they want involved in their healthcare decisions. With culturally competent care, we can ensure that patients feel heard and get the care they need. Culturally competent care isn’t a far-off dream; it’s happening all around Colorado. We’re proud to say that our clinics already offer culturally competent care for the communities they serve. All healthcare providers can work toward providing care that considers the unique background of the patients they serve. #colorado #safetynet #healthcare #culturalcompetency

The United States is facing a serious shortfall of professionals in the healthcare space. Projections indicate that by the 2030s, there could be a deficit of approximately 124,000 physicians and 200,000 nurses, plus shortages in auxiliary professions — such as IT support, researchers, administrative business assistants, and more — that leave hospitals struggling to provide quality care to their communities. Upwardly Global's recent report, “The Returnship Model: A Blueprint for Healthcare Institutions Hiring Immigrant and Refugee Talent,” explores how employers can tap into underutilized talent pools, filling open roles across all aspects of the healthcare business, from patient care to IT to administration to research. https://lnkd.in/eZqEesta

This week #OurCare released 10 reports summarizing conversations about #primarycare with equity-deserving communities across the country They highlight ongoing racism & discrimination in the system but also community-based strengths we can draw on Between June and December 2023, we held 10 community community roundtables, 2 in each of British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Each session was ~7 hours and included between 14-24 participants Altogether, we heard from 192 people across the country. These conversations were made possible because of partnerships with some amazing community organizations who had strong relationships with equity-deserving communities We took care to ensure sessions were inclusive. Many were conducted in 3 to 5 languages at once There is a lot to unpack in the reports but here are some of themes we heard: 🔹Racism and other forms of discrimination are common experiences 🔹Language barriers are a significant challenge to receiving high quality care 🔹We need to expand the healthcare workforce to reflect the diversity of communities 🔹Indigenous models of care are culturally determined and have always worked 🔹Empowering individuals and communities is part of the solution Read our summary report. Or better yet, do a deep dive and read all 10 reports. https://lnkd.in/g9QhzCWV MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions University of Toronto, Department of Family and Community Medicine Unity Health Toronto MASS LBP

“We face a growing shortage of medical practitioners and other healthcare professionals in the United States that we can’t afford to ignore. With the right reforms and processes in place, the healthcare field is one area where well-trained immigrant talent can easily be tapped to help fill these workforce gaps,” states Jina Krause-Vilmar, President and CEO of Upwardly Global. “We are proud to be a leader in this effort, and will continue to work alongside like-minded organizations and policymakers to advocate for reforms that open doors for the thousands of underemployed international medical graduates in Illinois and across the country.” Check out Upwardly Global’s newest report, “Illinois’ Trailblazing Solution to Doctor Shortages: Opening Doors for Immigrant, Refugee, and Asylee Healthcare Professionals" https://lnkd.in/egNc-fVw #UpwardlyGlobalReport #IllinoisHealthcareTrailblazers #BreakingBarriers #DoctorShortageSolution #ImmigrantHealthcarePros #RefugeeAsyleeCareers #PolicyWins #CareerComeback #HealthcareHeroes #ILHealthcareProgress #LegislationSuccess #UpwardlyGlobalImpact #ChangeMakers #MedicalCareerRevival #DiverseHealthcareWorkforce
