The funding will help us enroll up to 7,000 new thermostats, EVs, EV chargers, and batteries in our platform with a focus on low- and moderate-income customers. Our partnership with Leap will allow us to bid these aggregated devices into CAISO, increasing the value of customer-owned DERs to the electricity system and providing a seamless experience for residents looking to enroll in the program.

In deeply decarbonized energy systems utilizing high penetrations of variable renewable energy, energy storage is needed to keep the lights on and the electricity flowing when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing. The MIT Energy Initiative’s study makes clear the need for energy storage and explores pathways using variable renewable energy resources and storage to reach decarbonized electricity systems efficiently by 2050.
We need a strong, sustainable, resilient energy storage technology industry value chain. There is a growing need for data transparency and availability and greater data granularity, including network congestion, renewable energy curtailment, market prices, renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions content, and installed energy storage facilities. This need becomes even more important for decisions about investment, location selection, and evaluation of new energy storage facilities.
The developed countries are essential in the energy transition process. They should
✔Assess capacity needs and potential financing gaps for relevant energy storage technologies
✔Identify actions required to remove barriers to demand response and behind-the-meter storage deployment
✔Establish cost-effective processes such as competitive bidding systems and appropriately designed capacity mechanisms
✔Accelerate the deployment of energy storage facilities and other flexibility tools on islands, remote areas and the EU’s outermost regions where grid capacity is insufficient or unstable
✔Publish detailed energy market data to facilitate investment decisions in new energy storage facilities
✔Support research and innovation – especially long-term energy storage – and launch technology accelerator programs and dedicated support programs
More initiatives are needed to
✔ facilitate the deployment of flexible resources to supplement intermittent renewable energy production
✔address specific barriers to distributed sources of flexibility, including #energy#storage
