Why Invest? Last weekend, I had the pleasure of staying in the picturesque village of Youlgreave in the Peak District for a lovely long weekend of walks, fresh air and relaxation. During a visit to the local village shop for some essentials, my total purchase amounted to £4.84, but I was informed at the till that there was a £5 minimum spend for card payments. With no cash on hand (obviously), I found myself scanning the shop for a solution. The cashier helped me out… “You could buy a Freddo”, she said. In my head, Freddo’s are still 10p. But there it was, on the shelf, 25p. Twenty-five pence. That's a 2.5x increase over just a couple of decades. It dawned on me that over a 20 or 30 year retirement, we can expect to witness similar price increases (2.5x) across all goods and services. This is why we invest. Investing is about safeguarding our purchasing power and ensuring that we can maintain our standard of living, both now and in the future.
