It’s another Parkrun-inspired post…
This time, it’s about going downhill.
A few weeks ago I ran a new Parkrun course. My usual course is flat, 3 laps on pavement, so it’s pretty easy to get into a rhythm and keep at a steady pace. Many runners come to my park when they’re aiming for a Personal Best because of the flat and easy terrain.
The new course I tried last week involved some woods, some uphill parts, some downhill, and then more woods and mud. It was hard! I was huffing and puffing like I rarely do on my usual flat run (*edit: I always huff and puff, but this was more! 😁 ).
What I took away from the experience, though, was about the importance of resting.
When things are uphill and hard, and you’re really having to exert yourself, it takes a toll. Things take more energy on the uphill.
I really had to allow myself to enjoy it on the downhill parts. To rest a bit and go easy.
So, when you’re coming down off the project, and you’ve had your foot on the gas…
Or when you’ve been through a super-hectic phase or season in life or work…
Or when things have just felt like a slog, like a real sense of it being “an uphill battle”...
Then please, please, let yourself come gently down. Cool your jets. Relax the parts that have been so active and getting it all done.
Take in the scenery, look around you, notice how far you’ve come. But please enjoy the downhill and the flat terrain when you’re on them. Uphills will arrive again, so for now, when it’s flat, appreciate the chance to breathe and to rest.
