Harnessing the Power of Curves: Neurodesign at Rallim Secondary School Rallim Pre I Prep I Secondary prioritizes student well-being and academic success. At Xperiencemakers we supported this ethos by incorporating evidence-based neurodesign principles into their new Secondary School expansion. Curved forms are a prime example. Research suggests they create a more calming and inviting atmosphere, fostering a sense of safety and security in students. This is particularly important in creative spaces like the Music Pods and Vlog & Podcast rooms (pictured). By incorporating these elements, we've designed a space that not only feels safe and inviting, but also encourages exploration and self-expression. Curved furniture creates a more open and fluid environment, removing the rigidity of straight lines and sharp edges. This can help students feel more relaxed and comfortable to take risks, experiment with ideas, and let their creativity flow freely. These thoughtfully designed spaces foster a sense of ease and informality, making it easier for students to loosen up, collaborate with peers, and develop their creative voices. 🌈 Journey to Confidence at Central Michigan University 🌈 Meet Alex, a dedicated student at Central Michigan University, eager to embrace the collegiate experience. As someone on the autism spectrum, Alex often finds new environments overwhelming, leading to heightened anxiety. The bustling life and expansive layout of CMU's campus initially seemed like a formidable challenge. However, a groundbreaking partnership between CMU and Able Eyes would transform Alex's university journey. Able Eyes has meticulously created virtual tours for key locations on campus, including Park Library, Grawn Hall, Finch Fieldhouse, the College of Education & Human Services, and Wightman Hall. This initiative allowed Alex to embark on a digital exploration of these essential spaces, providing a sense of familiarity and reducing the stress of navigating them in person. For Alex, these virtual tours were more than just a preview; they were a lifeline. Being able to "visit" these spaces from the comfort of home meant that Alex could plan routes, identify quiet areas for breaks, and gain confidence in moving from one class to another. The once intimidating campus now felt welcoming, with each virtual step paving the way for real-life adventures. The partnership between Central Michigan University and Able Eyes highlights the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in education. Using natural light to manipulate space is a profound tool in any interior designer's toolkit because it can maximize space, infuse wellness, and prioritize views.   When designing Canadian Mennonite University's Marpeck Commons, natural light was critical in realizing the project's full potential. We used natural light as a framework for CMU's campus, highlighting new and old through floor-to-ceiling windows directly oriented to views of the university's existing architecture and allowing for a deeper sense of place and connection.   We also prioritized the relationship between interior and exterior environments. Bringing views of nature inside is vital to any well-designed space because it evokes feelings of happiness, helping our bodies produce Vitamin D and improving our circadian rhythms and sleep patterns--which is especially significant for university students, where late nights spent at the library studying are commonplace!   Can you see the light?

Beginning next month, I'll embark on a journey back to my artistic roots, diving deep into the nexus of imagination, narratives, and architecture, all shaded with hues reminiscent of William Gibson's cyberpunk realm. Firstly, I'll traverse the intersection of '60s architectural tech sketches, but with a twist – each will be viewed through the prism of Caribbean mythology. Secondly, I'll explore the intriguing concept of deities migrating into new territories, utilizing the futuristic transit ports of the year 3024. Lastly, I'll delve into the confluence of artistic mediums, speculating on the future of artistry while echoing the artistic lexicons of bygone eras.

"Fields like #DesignThinking, user experience, industrial design, graphic design, #architecture, design research, and many more operate within a #hierarchy of creativity. Design professionals build their value system and decide what artifacts should expand to the rest of the world, and what shouldn’t. Conversely, there’s an important cultural difference made between design, as a discipline that shapes our world, and craft, a label attached to #local, #indigenous, and #communal forms of creativity — no matter their genius, their contextual practicality, or their community engagement. [..] In the #GlobalSouth, buildings that draw on local or Indigenous materials and practices are labeled “#vernacular” or “traditional”, whereas in the #GlobalNorth they’re known as “#heritage”. [..The author argues that] rich, white, educated, male, Western people audit which objects can be appropriately subsumed into capitalist logics, and the rest of the world, who’ve been designing for millennia before any version of academic #canon, build assets that are considered unvaluable and proto-modernist. A core part of #liberatorydesign means breaking these hierarchies, and relearning how folks can learn from unique and ever-lasting forms of creativity."
