This wise quote, often attributed to Alan Lakein, perfectly captures this planning concept by bridging the gap between the future and the present, empowering us to take action today. Before every task, take the time for a thorough hazard assessment and pre-job briefing. It's not just a formality; it's a proactive step in ensuring everyone's safety. When we bring future challenges and risks into the present conversation, we're better prepared to address them and keep our teams safe. Likewise, the emergency action plan is our lifeline in times of crisis. By planning and practicing for emergencies, we're not only preparing for the unexpected but also reducing the chances of accidents in the first place. Remember, safety isn't a one-time event; it's a continuous process that starts with planning. Unfortunately, our vision of a General typically applies all the way down the administrative food chain to the first-tier level of "general," the field foreman. And that is how many if not most operate. Just think how much damage this "Eisenhower approach" will cause to production--and how many lives it would save. (Or will it enhance production and protect the lives of our people.)
