Are you allowing negativity in your organization? It’s so important to be clear with your people that you do not speak negatively to or about your clients. At Disney, we made it very clear to our managers and cast members that they were not to speak negatively in front of their team members and the guests. You don’t ever say “that customer was such a pain in the neck” or “I wish they hadn’t come.” No, we don’t do that. Thank you Arianna for the insightful post. The greatest trait about legendary people is that they are all ordinary people with extraordinary attitudes to life and what to make of it, in the short span allotted to make a difference. Miley Cyrus unabashedly shared her contingency plan of a short speech in case she got ‘tongue-tied’. How natural. How human. How honest. Love her for her forthrightness. If we try and fail, it’s ok. It’s not fatal. But if we fail to try, we have already failed. Think about it. Legendary inventor Thomas Edison was once asked “were you not fed up when hundreds of your earlier attempts failed ?” Thomas Edison the humble man he was replied “ why should I get fed up, because now I know many of these things I have tried do not work”. What an insightful paradigm shift of our definition of failure. Ground reality is failure is seen as a loss. Investment has been lost, worse wasted. If that be the case we should detach the word ‘development’ from Research, don’t you think? Because development as a process would at times fail and incur losses. Hence an intrinsic fear that debars us from venturing into the last mile because it may be fraught with danger, when in essence we may be actually moving towards the winning post. Success is not the opposite of failure. It is the stepping stone to success. If only we are taught from our early years this gem. Your people are your brand! This is so important that I wrote a chapter about it in my book. The best brands are known because they are consistent, you trust them, you go back to them, because of the people and how the people treat you. Even at Disney, people come for the whole environment, the whole experience. We get no letters about the rides or about the shows. Every letter is about the housekeeper that did something for their daughter, the waitress who went to the store and bought someone a phone charger. Those people represent us and they represent their professionalism. Hire the right people. Train the right. Treat them right. Watch how your experience flourishes. I took my kids to Disney! The happiness place on Earth 🌎 Here’s what a trip to Disney can teach me about how to be a better team leader. Here’s what I found out: 1. The Little Things are the Big Things Just like Mickey Mouse pays attention to every guest, a good leader notices even the small things that make a team happy. ^^^ starts with self-awareness 👁️ 👁️ 2. The Journey is Part of Winning Ever wait in line for a ride? In life, sometimes we have to wait calmly for the good stuff, like a great project to finish. ^^^ it’s who we become while we wait - resilient. 3. Different is Good Disney has lots of different characters, and they all work together to make a great day for everyone. A team with different kinds of people can do amazing things if they all work towards the same goal. ^^^ a symphony of sameness wouldn’t sound that great. Going to Disney taught me that to make big dreams come true, you need fun, patience, and a team that brings all kinds of ideas to the table. communicate clearly

A little motivation to kickstart your Monday. I love this scene of failure from Disney’s Meet the Robinsons. We all experience discomfort and disappointment when something does not go as planned. How we respond can dramatically alter the eventual outcome. As one would expect, and I’m sure as most of us would react the same, the main character Lewis is initially distraught at his failure. Yet the reaction from the Robinson family is spectacular and a masterclass for psychological safety and innovation. Here are some practical lessons we can all learn from them: • Recognize that failure is an event, not an ending • Celebrate the person(s) who were willing to take a risk by trying something new • Demonstrate vulnerability by sharing your own mishaps or failure moments • Encourage the person(s) to learn from the mistake and keep moving forward Our mistakes do not define us, our response to them does. #KeepMovingForward #FailForward #MotivationMonday Video credit: The Walt Disney Company, Meet the Robinsons (2007)
