This week's Africa GC Summit organized by Law Ninjas felt like a CLE (continuous legal education) facilitated by lawyers for lawyers. Imagine a room buzzing with over 300 lawyers from 23 countries across Africa convening to discuss several legal practice imperatives for In-house counsels. During the summit, my team Leilah Jacobs, Tamryn Sass (Harris) and Nicola van Heerden and I had the privilege of sharing insights on building an effective ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategy. I emphasized the importance of ESG for businesses by highlighting these key points: 1. Data from a research finding led by by DLA Piper and Cambridge University clearly indicates that ESG is no longer an option but a necessity for companies. 2. Investors increasingly consider ESG factors when assessing a company's risk profile and long-term value. 3. Today's consumers prefer to support companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. 4. Employees are drawn to purpose-driven organizations that balance societal impact with financial performance. As a proud Danoner - happy to see that this is at the heart of what we do. 5. Regulatory pressure from governments around the world further underscores the importance of sustainability and responsible corporate behavior. In the end, ESG is not just a trend—it's a strategic imperative for businesses and I am looking forward to seeing how this is embedded in local businesses.
