The Airbus-built European Service Module gets its very own tailor-made insulation suit!🪡 Did you know that some parts of the #ESM require hand-stitching? #TeamAirbus recently sewed on an essential part of the ESM 2 that insulates the spacecraft: the Flexible External Insulation mats (FEl). These thermal mats protect the rear part of the Service Module from the heat radiation of the main engine and auxiliary engines. Why does it have to be hand-stitched and not pre-stitched by a machine?🧵 Well, considering the ESM is 4.5 metres in diameter, it is simply too big!
