Put together a plan for Construction Safety Week!! Fall Protection Work Plan WAC 296-880-10020 1. Employer must develop and implement a written fall protection work plan that addresses each area of the work place where the employees are assigned and where fall hazards of 10 feet or more exist. 2. The FPWP must: a. Identify all fall hazards in the work area; b. Describe the method of fall arrest or fall restraint to be provided; c. Describe the proper procedures for the assembly, maintenance, inspection, and disassembly of the fall protection system to be used; d. Describe the proper procedures for the handling, storage, and securing of tools and materials; e. Describe the method of providing overhead protection for workers who may be in, or pass through the area below the work area; f. Describe the method for prompt, safe removal of injured workers; and g. Thank you Emmalisa Slater (Lloyd) for this post. I wish someone had told me about this when I was sending crews into the desert installing microwave antennae and conduit. What's the use of having a plan if people don't actually know how to execute it? Did a mock investigation of a plant last year and even with 2 weeks warning, the scenario bombed (it was there success to actually pay for the work to test things). I say, "Plan it, Practice it, then Perfect it". Work to develop a good plan but then test it to find your shortcomings and then feedback to correct it and try again until your practicing. Laster we can talk real auditing.

The 2,3,4,5,6 rule for trench safety is a set of guidelines to ensure the safety of workers involved in trenching activities. Here's a breakdown: 1. **2 feet**: All spoil piles must be at least 2 feet back from the edge of the trench. This helps prevent the spoil from falling back into the trench and potentially injuring workers or causing cave-ins. 2. **3 feet**: The access ladder must extend at least 3 feet beyond the top of the protective system. This ensures that workers can safely enter and exit the trench. 3. **4 feet**: When the trench reaches a depth of 4 feet, access and egress are required. This means that there must be a way for workers to enter and exit the trench safely. 4. **5 feet**: When the depth of the trench is 5 feet or more, a protective system must be installed to protect all workers from a cave-in. Protective systems can include shoring, shielding, or sloping the trench walls. 5. **6 feet**: Fall protection is required when the depth of the trench is 6 feet or greater. Most general contractors require fall protection for all trades onsite at this depth to prevent falls into the trench.

Very impressive! Every new orientation training I conduct (where working from heights is expected) I tell my employees, “when you are issued a harness and asked to don it your very next question should be, ‘how will you get me down!’”. If they do not have a good answer, do NOT don that harness!! Every job scope that includes working from heights with fall protection equipment REQUIRES a fall rescue plan! Doesn’t have to be complicated. However, when the response is, ‘oh we will use the crane, or the aerial lift, or the scissor lift, etc’ then I challenge the next question…”where is said equipment? How long will it take you to initiate said equipment? Who is authorized to operate said equipment? Can the equipment even access the area of said work/personnel”. They are usually stomped and clearly do NOT have a fireproof plan in place!
