Adaptive sports have the ability to completely enhance lives, but too many people still don’t realize these programs are available. There isn’t nearly enough awareness around adaptive programs. And of the ones that do exist, many of them struggle with limited funding for specialized facilities and equipment. When I first went blind, I had no idea opportunities like adaptive skiing existed- and that’s a problem. I was blind for nearly 15 years before I learned about adaptive skiing. We must increase awareness around these programs because they give people with disabilities the chance to build community, challenge their limitations, and just enjoy activities that otherwise may have seemed impossible. Adaptive programs are designed to empower individuals to become stronger and more resilient, setting them up to overcome challenges both on and off the field. #AdaptiveSports #ParaSports #Awareness #DEI Challenge Aspen

East Riding Haltemprice Leisure required a pool lift solution to make its small pool accessible and inclusive to all. The Pool Lift Company were asked to provide a suitable portable pool lift solution. With a fixed pool hoist already in place for the large swimming pool, East Riding Haltemprice Leisure were eager to find a solution for its small pool which has steps. This would enable users with limited movement due to their physical disabilities and those who are unable to weight bear themselves, step free access to the shallow small pool where they can benefit from a warmer water temperature. The Movember 'Ahead of the Game' (MAOTG) programme is back in partnership with the GAA and the Gaelic Players Association! Did you know?... ▶ 1️⃣ in 3️⃣ young people in Ireland are likely to have a mental health challenge by the age of 13. ▶ More than 1️⃣ in 6️⃣ people in Ireland have a mental health problem like anxiety or depression. ▶ 7️⃣5️⃣% of adults with a diagnosable mental health problem experience the first symptoms by the age of 24. If your GAA club is interested in engaging with the programme in the coming months, please feel free to reach out! Poor mental health can effect anyone at any age, regardless of education, income, or culture. Mental health problems are extremely common in young people and athletes are not immune to this. Of those that experience mental illness, most people make a full recovery with appropriate help and support. There is treatment for everyone. MAOTG is the most evidence based youth sport emotional literacy programme in the world! It covers content on how to recognise mental health disorders, what to do and when to get help. The programme highlights the importance of building mental fitness to deal with the challenges of life. The programme is delivered in GAA clubs all over Ireland and involves two workshops, one for male or female teams and one for the parents and coaches of these teams. Since it kicked off just seven months ago, 176 clubs across the 32 counties of Ireland have taken part in Phase 1 of MAOTG, with at least 1 club in every county receiving a workshop. The initiative has engaged 2,729 young male and female members, as well as 1,863 parents and club coaches. MAOTG has already had a positive influence on participants during Phase 1: ⏩ 9️⃣1️⃣% had a better understanding of the importance of being mentally fit and healthy. ⏩ 9️⃣4️⃣% said they now know who to talk to and where to go for mental help support for themselves and for others (also 94%). ⏩ 9️⃣1️⃣ % said that after the session they felt more assured in recognising the signs of poor mental health in themselves. ⏩ 9️⃣3️⃣ % said that they feel more confident recognising the signs of poor mental health in others too. ⏩ 9️⃣3️⃣ % of player participants also said they now had confidence to talk with a friend going through a tough time with their mental health after taking part in.

Another sport, another report into widespread cultural issues. Whilst it is disappointing, we hope with every report it normalises the conversation we need to have - that sport is structured in a way that these issues can and do happen regularly, across many of our sports. We should expect to find issues, unless the work has been done to change our systems and cultures to be inclusive by design. If the conversation can move from the shock to the expectation and the willingness to improve and prioritise change, we can start to enact change. Swim England now follows the ECB, English Rugby, Cricket Scotland and a number of other sports in publishing details of the challenges they are facing. It is good that sports are now proactively looking into their cultural issues, and being transparent on the challenges. Acknowledging there is an issue is the first step to progress. For many years, this has been buried in fear of the consequence on sport's reputations. What do these continual disclosures tell us? The problems sport is facing are ingrained and deeply structural. The only way to now address them is to work out how we start to address the problems is to recognise that the work goes beyond education and a bit of unconscious bias training. It requires expertise and interventions to work not just on individual and programmatic issues, but also to support those in positions of influence to work through the systematic issues within sport alongside this. This will need full commitment from many parties to lean into the idea that our sporting systems are not equitable. But with bravery, hard work and a commitment to explore the problem as a priority, we can change things. To those that say sport is a mirror of society, we would say it is actually a leading force of how society thinks and behaves. If we can get this right in sport, it can be a change agent for many many things.

Should I stay in my lane?😳 Pick a side in this swimming pool politics riddle! In my swimming summer camp, the pool is divided into 4 lanes. The side lanes went to children, with the left lane for female and right lane for male beginners. The middle two lanes went to eight relatively older and good swimmers who needed space to practice laps. They swam in a much more systematic and excelling manner than the other two lanes. Change: Today the middle lanes got reduced to just one, with the left lane expanded to accommodate more girls. The reduced space meant that only two middle laners could swim at one point. Time to pick sides! While the middle lane swimmers were less in number, they were also the ones deserving more space because they swam at a higher level. They were the pride of the summer camp because they showcased its best, so was it really fair to prioritize a beginner's space over theirs? After all, the pool was equally theirs and they were paying for it with their own money. Now the free time they had because of slowed practice went into discussing their frustrations amongst other middle lane swimmers, all while the little girls paddled around chaotically. What a misuse of their space! But- While the left lane little girls were relatively unsophisticated, the point of a summer camp for them was to have a space where you can comfortably learn the basics. The point of a summer camp for the administration was to cater to such beginners as they have greater need for a beginner learning space. Increasing their space was the only solution to a disproportionately large pool (pun intended) of female beginners. So was it fair to increase the space for left laners at the expense of the middle laners? Whose side would you pick? And is it easy to pick a side? You might be more inclined towards one of the two arguments, but both lanes have justified problems, which lead to conflict when you see the pool as a community of learners. My point of brining up this experience was explaining how a lack of resources can cause conflict in families, communities, organizations, national and international governments. There is no side, only inevitable change that leads to an entirely different playing field. Earlier the left lane girls were vulnerable but now that they are given some favour, they also have power attached to their position in the pool. And that is bound to ruffle some feathers among those for whom the change was detrimental. We are so consistently pestered with the culture of picking a side that there is no middle ground discussion with the stakeholders who are affected by the change. There is no easy way to resolve conflict, but a mentality of 'stay in your lane' is harmful for both the parties because it leads to vicious cycles of misunderstandings and lack of communication. So what causes this lack of respectful disagreement? And is it better to pick a side, or have a stance that questions the negatives of both lanes?

A great step in bringing real world context to this important legal change. And yes, risk is definitely good :)
With thanks to Léon Fox for the invitation, HF Ireland was very happy yesterday to get the opportunity to present to, and speak with a broad group of interested parties and stakeholders from the world of outdoor sports, activities and tourism in relation to the recent changes to the Occupiers' Liability Act, and the hopefully positive impacts which it will have on their businesses into the future. The concept of 'personal responsibility' - now enshrined in the legislation with the insertion of a new Section 5A into the OLA 1995 - was understandably of particular interest and relevance to the attendees, many of whose businesses and operations do of course involve activities which necessarily come with an element of 'risk'. As a delegate at another recent talk said, however, 'risk is good' ... and it is something which should be encouraged in the right environment.
