However, the future profitability of AMC Theatres depends on various factors such as the recovery of the film industry, consumer preferences, competition from streaming services, and the overall economic climate. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the movie theater industry, with many theaters experiencing financial challenges due to closures and restrictions. The long-term success of AMC Theatres will depend on their ability to adapt to changing market dynamics and implement effective business strategies.

PVR INOX plans to expand aggressively, aiming to increase the number of screens. However, this move may not necessarily lead to an improvement in their valuations. Comparing this strategy to two prominent cinema theatre companies, AMC and Wanda Cinemas, sheds light on potential challenges. AMC, the largest cinema theatre company in the USA with over 10,000 screens, struggles with low occupancy rates, resulting in minimal profits and significant debt. This situation has even led to AMC being labeled a meme stock in the stock market. Similarly, Wanda Cinemas faces a decline in occupancy rates in China, mirroring AMC's challenges. The common trend observed in these scenarios is that when cinema companies aggressively expand, the supply of movie theatres can outstrip the actual demand, leading to financial difficulties. Given the recent merger of PVR and INOX into a single entity, it raises the question of whether this combined force will succeed in their expansion plan. What are your thoughts on the potential outcomes of this strategic move #cinema #PVRINOX #expansion #stockmarket

Is Hollywood Returning to Its Roots with Sony's Acquisition of Alamo Drafthouse? This week, Sony Pictures Entertainment made headlines by acquiring Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, signalling a return to Hollywood's old studio system. With the Department of Justice having lifted a decades-old ban on studios owning theatres, this move brings back vertical integration in the film industry. 🍿 Why does this matter? For decades, the Paramount Decree prevented film studios from controlling both production and exhibition, fostering a diverse landscape of independent theatres and studios. Sony's acquisition, following the sunset of these regulations, is a clear commitment to the theatrical experience, even as streaming dominates the market. 🎥 Alamo Drafthouse, known for its unique movie-going experience, will now be part of Sony Pictures Experiences. Amid post-lockdown struggles, this move aims to rejuvenate cinemas and ensure theatres remain central to film enjoyment. 🎉 Could this spark a resurgence in theatre attendance, or will streaming continue to dominate? How might this reshape the film industry landscape? What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of studios owning theatres again? Share your thoughts below! 🎬 Sony Pictures Entertainment, Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, Netflix, Warner Bros. 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗔𝗺𝗶𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝘅 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗽𝘀 The recent lackluster performance of high-budget films such as 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' and 'Maidaan' has forced both multiplexes and single-screen theaters to reduce showtimes or temporarily close screens. With large operating costs and dwindling audiences, theaters are taking drastic measures, including lowering ticket prices and offering ad-free showings, to entice viewers back. Despite these efforts, theaters struggle with unsustainable financials in the face of poor film reception and increased competition from streaming services. #finance #news #CinemaCrisis #BoxOffice #FilmIndustry Source:- https://lnkd.in/dA2rc8qD

Theatres and multiplexes in India are witnessing a reduction of screenings due to underperforming films, Rajeshwari Naidu reports for The Economic Times. In a bid to increase footfall, theatres have reduced their ticket prices, some are providing fixed coupons while others are running advertisement-free shows. Despite this, there is no considerable increase in footfall, says the report. People are not visiting theatres due to the lack of good content and they also have many more interesting avenues of entertainment, says Shaaminder Malik, film distributor and trade analyst. Meanwhile, more movies are released without prior OTT partnerships, leading to delay in addition to streaming platforms, another report by Livemint says. Reason? Wary of box office failures and insignificant viewership, OTTs are hesitant to acquire films, says the report. While several recently-released big ticket movies are yet to make an appearance on streaming platforms, the shift is even more difficult for low-budget films. An interesting business model that was a staple of the past is crashing under long simmering issues. The classic movie theaters (and especially the big chains sitting on huge footprints - AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark and others) do not control their content, are bounded by long-standing agreements regarding payouts, are being pulled apart at the edges by streaming services releasing directly to the consumer (and getting a hold of new movies far faster than they used to). There is a strong consumer base that is wholly dependent upon the release of X! Theater chains viability will be defined by their ability to take advantage of their physical structure effectively & flexibly during times of weak movie production. Will be (and is) a very interesting industry to watch. #strategy #leadership https://lnkd.in/erHd953d

Founder of AK Online OTT Platform for Independent Films. Also a Film Director / Producer at Info Pluto Media Works. Publisher & Editor of Art.Knowledge Magazine & Portal. Visiting faculty at PSG Institute of Management.
Today’s Thought for Producers, OTT Platforms & Theatres. OTT platforms must stream so called Big Actors movies only on Pay Per View or Revenue Share only then the fake market claim of so called big stars will get exposed and the real market will be known so that producers can invest wisely and can take an informed investment decision. Performance based salary is the need of the hour. Let all the fake market hype fall to its realistic levels. Then OTT platforms will also have their fund available to buy many more films of all categories and Producers will also have fund to introduce 100s of New talents and finally the Press and Media will wake up to not put Jalra for views. Theatres will also understand that equal percentage of small movies and big movies fail. Theatre owners and Distributors should not buy any movie on MG without seeing the content. If producers refuse to show the preview to distributor or buyer then it should be considered as an unsafe investment and the buyers should avoid. Let there be transparency everywhere ! Only then we can say content is the king ! Regards #Arunkanth #OTTbiz #OTTplatforms #filmproduction #Filmproducer #MovieTheatre #MovieDistribution #OTTupdates #OTTnews #OTT #OTTplatform #Filmmaking

I keep reading the phrase "in selected theaters," and I really find it quite amusing. It's often a euphemism for a very limited release, but it’s framed to sound prestigious. Despite this, such minimal, ineffective theatrical releases often result in significant costs for investors, who are enticed by distributors with the "we are going theatrical" dream. At the same time, distributors inflate these limited releases with costs that are then cross-collateralized with digital distribution revenues, ultimately channeling most of the earnings to the distribution side. Is it really necessary to go to theaters with these limited releases?
