Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO in charge of #AIEthics #NeuroEthics #SocialJustice #Gender #Youth & #Sports
By 2030, young Africans are projected to constitute 42% of the world’s youth. With a growing interest in rugby across the continent – it’s currently present in almost 40 countries –, rugby is one of the sports with more potential for driving socioeconomic progress for African societies. I have joined forces with Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Afrique, to make a very concrete call to harness the power of sports in general and rugby in particular: we need commitment and investment. Africa can build a promising economic ecosystem, offering immense potential to drive human development and livelihoods to African societies, but only if we pull efforts in the same direction. At UNESCO, we firmly believe it’s high time we recognise the attributes of rugby to address social challenges and build more sustainable communities for all. Together, we can make a difference! https://lnkd.in/egYmd5ef #Fit4Life #InvestInAfrica #RugbyAfrique #Sport

We Need Your Help! We started our work officially in 2015 when we held our 1st Inter - County Peace Futsal Championship 2015 and Registered as a Community Based Organisation In Mombasa in 2016, followed by Nairobi, Nakuru and Siaya. Transitioning into an NGO soon. Over the past 9 years we know we have touched a few lives through our work. Would not have made it to United Nations FootballForTheGoals platform and even led the FootballForTheGoals Inaugural Tournament if we did not deliver value to those we have served (check it out https://lnkd.in/dKQFeQJK) All we don't want to say is.. WE HAVE TOUCHED OVER A MILLION LIVES YET WE HAVEN'T! We want to give people a chance to share their stories and we want to make it Open and Transparent and not exaggerate the work we have done. So here is the Help we need, we are just finalising our website and there is a segment on Testimonials. On there we want to feature the stories of people who have been involved in our journey and have benefited from it in one way or another and have also supported along the way. So here is how it's going to work. Head to your preferred Social Media, Share who you are, how you were/are being involved with us, the value you gained/given and the message you have to the people around the globe (Especially the young people) Use the #GYFStories. On every platform you use mention or tag us so we can capture your Testimony. The Testimony doesn't have to be Positive, we welcome the negative side too as we know we can't be perfect and it's our imperfections that has got us here, so share them without fear or favour and will take it as it is, so long as it's genuine and constructive we would love to hear from you. Let's get the ball started. Valdivia V. Kibunja | George Gakure | Justine Mokua | JOHN BRYAN | ANNE MURATHIMME | SSEMWOGERERE FRANK | MERCY N MUINDI | FATMA MOHAMED ABDULLAHI Let's start with you, feel free to mention a friend or two who you know have been part of the journey and have something to share. Kenya's top performance in Africa at the Olympics is a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of our athletes, and they deserve our heartfelt congratulations. However, this achievement also underscores the need for better sports management and governance to sustain and improve our success. Legally, there should be clear frameworks ensuring transparency in the allocation of funds for training and facilities, with strict oversight to prevent mismanagement. Additionally, laws that support the establishment of more grassroots sports programs can help identify and nurture talent from a young age. Furthermore, it's essential to broaden the variety of sports Kenya participates in by venturing into areas where we have traditionally been less active. By addressing these governance issues and expanding our sports portfolio, Kenya can continue to excel on the global stage. #KenyaAtTheOlympics #SupportOurAthletes #SportsGovernance #OlympicExcellence #KenyanSports #TalentDevelopment #ExpandSportsKenya #SportsManagement #FutureOfSports #BeyondAthletics #KenyaAtTheOlympics #Paris2024

>The #Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON or CAN) generated the highest revenue for the Confédération Africaine De Football (CAF). In 2022, the competition's revenue reached over 79.7 million U.S. dollars. That year, Senegal won their first title taking place in Cameroon. The tournament was supposed to take place in 2021, but was postponed to 2022 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Also, inter club tournaments generated almost 35.4 million U.S. dollars as of the same year. In 2021, inter clubs granted CAF its highest revenue of close to 46.3 million U.S. dollars. >In July, 2023, the Confederation of African #Football (CAF), posted, commercial revenues of USD $125.2 million – a 17% year on year increase. #CAF said the significant increase of $21.6 million in revenue growth over the 2022 financial year was largely driven by an increase in both CAF’s sponsorship and television rights, setting the organisation firmly on a path to financial recovery. The total competition expenses on prize money and tournaments for the 2023 increased by 26% to $78.9 million. CAF projected a further revenue increase in last financial year – on the back of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

Funding opportunity for those NGOs/CBOs working in #Africa to address #employability skills challenge amongst young people… The recent Report by International Labour Organisation says that by 2050, one in every three young people on earth will be of African origin. That same Publication dubbed ‘Global Employment Trends for Youth’ highlights that young people will be key players in the direction of future global consumption, culture and even stability. The challenge is, majority of people out of employment, live in Africa: One in four young people in Africa are (not in employment, education, or training (NEET)with Two-thirds of them are young women. South Africa is reporting the highest number of young people in the world not employed. And East Africa is being singled out as a region with more than half of its young people aged 15-35 being unemployed, with the rate even higher for young women in rural areas… Laureus, IOC and AFD jointlty has funding opportunity for those (local)organisations that are using sports as a tool to equip young people with skills that would provide opportunities for MEANINGFUL employment….
Laureus Sport for Good, the International Olympic Committee – IOC and Agence Française de Développement are pleased to announce two funding opportunities focused on using sport-based approaches to further support and promote the development of education and create more employability pathways for young people in Africa. Under the SESLA programme (Sport for Education and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa), Laureus, IOC and AFD aim to create more sustainable livelihoods for young people in Africa. The Open Call Application window will close on 27th September, with the Collaborative Application window closing one week later on 4th October. Further details of the two funding opportunities and applicable criteria can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eVXg3pYY #SportForGood

The education sector is the largest contributor to sports participation, with a market share of 48%. That's quite a target for goods and services, bit it's greatest importance is its source as the pool of raw talent from where elite athletes emerge, after a long training and development phase. For these talents to hone their skills, an army of development experts are needed - coaches, trainers, physios, agents, etc. How can we attract those who can serve in these roles in a more sustainable manner? When is the best time to redirect their thoughts towards a career in sports? We now have something that looks like gap years. Can we utilize these years profitably and positively, to enhance the capacity development attributes of our Sports industry? I will be speaking on these and other issues pertaining to sports and the education sector on Tuesday 1st October. Join us for the conversation at the Edutimes Webinar on The Way Forward - Rethinking the Future....spotlighting the future of children's education in Nigeria. See you there.
