To porridge or not to porridge? – oh the #glucose spike So should you be eating your porridge in the morning? Even the British Vogue published an article how you can modify your porridge to avoid spikes in glucose. I don’t think that eating oats in the morning will lead us on a path to type 2 diabetes. But can we fine tune our meal timing to optimise our health? I explore this in my new newsletter in context of the MTNRB1 (melatonin receptor) gene which has been shown to interact with the timing of carbohydrate rich meal to affect glucose levels. People with specific versions of this gene may be more sensitive to melatonin and may produce it for longer in the morning. Since high melatonin levels may suppress insulin production and sensitivity, research has shown that people with these versions may have higher glucose levels depending on their meal timing and carbohydrate content. Considering the World Salt Awareness week, I am resharing the article on whether dietary recommendations for #salt intake should be #personalised. A week late, I know 😊. We don’t all respond to salt intake in the same way. This is when it comes to our blood pressure and also our #taste perception of salt. How is your genetic data protected in the UK? When we talk about #nutrigenetic testing, consumers are worried about data protection. In the UK, we don’t have nutrigenetic specific #regulations that would guide the field, but still there are guidelines nutrigenetic test providers should adhere to. I list them in the blog (link below). As consumers and/or #practitioners, are you worried about data protection? Are you familiar with any other regulations that would be useful to know about?

Check out this article on Qina I wrote on salt sensitivity 🧂 Although the advice is to cut down on #salt to prevent or treat high blood pressure, this won't be effective for everyone. In fact, for half of the people with normal blood pressure and two thirds of the people with normal blood pressure. So what's the way to find out if you are salt-sensitive or not? Unfortunately it is not being done routinely in clinical #practice and the only way to find out if you have predisposition to be salt-sensitive is with a #DNA test. Thanks Mariette for inviting me!
