Lead People & Culture @ Zuddl (Y-Combinator)|| Human Resources || Ex-Tata || Gold Medalist (TISS, Mumbai)
"The goal is to hire someone better than me." when I heard this from a manager during a 1-on-1 hiring review discussion, it was music to my ears! As managers, we may assume that we need to know everything and be experts in all areas within our team. For instance, a Marketing Leader might have a general understanding of content marketing, product marketing, social media marketing, and marketing design, but chances are they may not be an expert in each domain. To build a winning team, teams need the best people in their game! Although hiring someone better than oneself might seem obvious, it is frequently overlooked due to managers’ perceived insecurities, lack of trust, perceived threats to one's position, and a focus on competition rather than collaboration. Embracing the idea of hiring individuals who are more skilled in specific areas than the manager is crucial for creating a strong and competent team. The biggest challenge of building an agency is finding the right people. ↪ It's not about the clients ↪ It's not about the marketing ↪ It's not about the systems The key to success is simple: Your team. 1. Identify core roles 2. Define clear expectations 3. Hire for culture fit AND skills Without the right people, even the best agency idea will falter. I learned this the hard way: • Lost time interviewing the wrong candidates • Lost clients due to poor performance • Lost momentum in my agency's growth My early days were a nightmare of bad hires and missed opportunities. ↪No amount of strategy can compensate ↪No brilliant pitch can make up for it ↪No fancy office can hide it That's why I now live by: Hire slow, fire fast. Don't repeat my mistakes. Those who build stellar teams will dominate the agency world : ) PS. WE ARE HIRING. Head of Business Development - Yandex Advertising Network | Distribution of Search, Games, and Appmetrica
When I hire, I look for people who WANT to do bigger, better things. I don’t want to micro-manage or push. Instead, my job as a manager is to inspire my team by: 👉 Highlighting opportunities, potential, and threats. 👉 Showing the bigger picture and possible impact. 👉 Finding new ways to look at the market or other markets. 👉 Assigning new exciting projects. An open mindset, not tunnel vision. Working with a team of motivated people on the broader picture, trying to find connections or bundle things up. It's so crucial for a competitive industry like advertising. This way, you give more value to your partners, and the company keeps growing in different directions. This is what truly pushes the company and the people within the company to grow. #Business #Growth #Hiring

What should you look for when hiring a CMO? There are a number of things, but one is more important than all the rest: Long range vision. The ability to see down the road. The other things are also important: The ability to put a plan around it, articulate it clearly, sell it internally, lead execution on it including tactical and creative, measure its effectiveness, and adapt as needed. Plus a backbone, because vision always comes with opposition…possibly even from you. All those are vital. But they all depend on the primary skill of vision. If you already have vision, you don’t need a CMO - you might need a marketing manager, marketing director, or creative director, but not a CMO. But if you don’t have vision, hire for vision. Make sure you get as much of the other stuff as well, maybe including a good throwing arm for the company softball team, but get the vision. That’s the thing worth paying CMO level salary for. Vision can be (and should be) game changing. Hire for vision. Then buckle up for the ride.

In the hustle of NYC, a quick snack run turned into a LinkedIn message that landed Alyssa Bonanno the role of fractional CMO at Ithaca Hummus. Today, she's part of a growing trend of fractional marketing execs, changing how companies tackle their marketing needs. As expectations for CMOs evolve, fractional roles offer flexibility and expertise without a long-term commitment. Fractional CMOs step in to bridge these gaps, whether due to parental leave, sick leave, or sudden departures. It's a win-win for both sides, making sure there's the right fit without the risk. Hiring a fractional CMO is a big decision for many businesses — so the question becomes, when is the right time to consider the hire? What scenarios need to exist? ➝ Starting Out: Need strategic guidance from the start? A CMO leads critical steps in user acquisition and growth. ➝ Stagnant Growth: A marketing leader refreshes your approach for better results. ➝ Communication Challenges: Need a narrative refresh or improved media outreach? A CMO enhances your story and visibility. ➝ Retention and Engagement Focus: A CMO brings fresh strategies to keep customers engaged while fostering better team collaboration, even part-time. Have you considered hiring fractional? What questions would you need answered before taking that step?

What a joy to work with the Founder and team at Smiley Company to help them find a permanent Marketing Director 🤩 They're an iconic brand- still independent and fiercely purpose-led. 😊 This success story highlights some important factors to landing top marketing talent: 🚗 Speed Matters: Great candidates move fast- even at the Head of/Senior end. Prioritising recruitment and having a decisive hiring process ensured they locked in top talent at every stage. 🌟The Founder and his amazing team involved me in their collective meetings/processes more than any other business I have worked for. We had ongoing teams' calls, updates and consistent feedback chats. It meant that I was truly able to get under the skin of what they needed and wanted- as well as that important cultural fit factor. As a result, I believe it's one of the best recruitment matches I have helped facilitate in my career. 🙂😊🙂 Read about our success story here: https://lnkd.in/eSAasUsX #recruitment #marketing #retail
