Author: 'Founder's Legacy - Fifty Game-Changing Leadership Lessons for Building a Great Business' Founder & Chairman, Value Partnership;
Below is a link to a recent podcast I did with Roger Philby and New Street Consulting Group (NSCG). We chatted about High Performance Teams. Teams are a crucial “organisational building block” for high performance that needs intention and commitment to get right. Top teams that work together toward a common vision are 1.9 times more likely to deliver above-median financial performance (McKinsey & Company). Few teams realise their potential though – there is latent performance in your organisation. Realising that potential requires the level of practice, discipline and hard work that great sports teams have. We see teams where the level of trust is so poor that the behavioural consequences are supressed conflict, people pushing their own agendas, poor decisions, a lack of accountability and worse. This makes it impossible to deliver great performance. People frequently lack clarity about what good looks like or how to improve when you are in such a dire situation. Whether in crisis or seeking to realise the latent potential in your team, you need to get two sets of things right: the disciplines and the dynamics of a high performing team. The disciplines: • Common purpose & values • Shared performance goals & strategy • Mutual accountability • Complementary skills • Shared commitment to how we work together The dynamics: • Focus on team results • Hold peers accountable • Commit to group decisions • Engage in constructive conflict • Demonstrate trust Mutual accountability is a vital ingredient for any team that needs to create “collective work products” such as an amazing customer experience. It sits alongside and does not in any way replace individual accountability. It is the thing that demands that the team works as a team. “The goalkeeper is not going to win the Champions League. It’s going to take a squad of players, working together over a sustained period of time working towards mutual goals. Just so with business teams.”
In our latest podcast episode, our very own Roger Philby had the privilege of interviewing Simon Court, delving into the intricate workings of #HighPerformance leadership teams. From uncovering the tactics essential for unlocking potential, to detailing the trust equation, their conversation navigates through the realm of #LeadershipExcellence.
