Anybody can be an executive assistant, right? Its not that hard. Just sit someone in the chair and they'll figure it out. Yeah, maybe, with a bunch of ramp-up time and training. Even then, there are people who just don't have the right skill set or personality. Constant interruptions with new things that need to get done. Figuring out what actually is a priority when everything seems like its at the top. Jumping in to help with something you've never done before because it needs to get done. Knowing a little about everything because you're the first one people will ask. Hiring an EA may not be as sexy as hiring someone in marketing or sales, but we fill in the gaps. We are force multipliers. The experienced ones can hit the ground running upon hire and make an impact in the first days and weeks vs months.

This might be an unpopular opinion incoming but…. STOP LUMPING OFFICE MANAGER AND EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT ROLES TOGETHER!!! ❌ They are not the same skill set ❌ Its not an easy fix for covering two roles The minute you add anything else to an EA's role spec, it means you’re taking away from there ability to have a deeper impact to those they support. To be honest, the same goes for giving 1 EA 4 Exec’s to support and wondering why they’re not able to go deeper and do more than “just” the basics. But that's a rant for another day! I know I know, every business is different… But would you hire 1 person to be “Marketing Executive and Customer Success Manager”? No, you wouldn’t. Because they’re 2 different roles. They are awesome at: Operations Project management Customer success They make stuff happen. They are what AI will never be able to do. But most of all, these are incredibly gifted people who don’t flinch when presented with the most challenging task. Hire a planner.

I may be biased to Julius Solaris’ opinion below - He’s so right! I’ve never worked with better all-around problem solvers than the people who successfully plan and execute events. We have the ability to communicate with all levels of sometimes very complicated cross-functional teams. When changes come up (as they often do) - we pivot on a dime and deliver the best possible outcomes. AI may help us get through a lot of things - but it does not replace face to face, live, human experiences.
