Another insightful presentation in the always interesting NORR ed lecture series. Sir David Chipperfield, one the greatest architects of this generation, delivered a truly inspiring and thought provoking talk on the responsibilities of practice. David touches on the power of global investment, not always as a power for good with his own practice moving toward community-based work with social meaning- not the iconic typically associated with high profile architecture. It is interesting to hear Chipperfield admit to form as a willful exercise rather than driven by function. That said I believe context has always defined Chipperfield’s work and set his practice apart from his peers- context establishes the form of each building, blending in and contributing meaning to the building and its surrounds- this makes each building meaningful. It is also interesting to note the practice’s increased interest in building retention and repurposing with minimal, yet innovative interventions on most of their recent work. As David says ARCHITECTURE IS IMPORTANT.#NORR #davidchipperfield #meaningfularchitecture
Architects as agents of change. Sir David Chipperfield, world-renowned architect and 2023 laureate of The Pritzker, delivered an honest and humbling lecture on the need to reframe the practice of architecture to manage climate change, loss of biodiversity and social inequities. Chipperfield offered three compelling themes: understand the larger picture and actively contribute to solving global challenges; redefine values by moving beyond project-specific values and adopt a broader perspective, aligning objectives to the greater good; and collaborate for impact by moving beyond individualism and finding common purpose by sharing knowledge. Published today in the 190th issue of the 'Wednesday Magazine'. This time tackling the issue of the 'unavoidable art' of architecture, for the common good. The flexibility philosophy gives us to push the boundaries of knowledge is always so exciting. My gratitude goes to the editor Dr Rahim Hassan and his team. More on: https://lnkd.in/gaJjj2U

Lots of people assume the legendary architect Frank Gehry is some sort of mad artist whose wildly imaginative buildings are the product of a single, dazzling flash of inspiration. Nothing could be further from the truth. As Prof. Bent Flyvbjerg and I discuss in "How Big Things Get Done," Gehry's process is one of relentless iteration -- "What if we did this? What if we did that?" -- which he overwhelmingly does in collaboration with his team, external partners, and his clients. I wish like heck we had known about this interview with Steve Jobs when we were writing the book because, even though Jobs is discussing how ideas become products in tech, he nails it: This is how Frank Gehry produces visionary architecture, on time and on budget. https://lnkd.in/emW48isF

Deep Tech for Human Health & Performance ◆ Open Strategy-Execution ◆ Demand-Side Innovation ◆ Translational Research
When we talk about designing and developing #systems, we are talking about thoughtful #action not just thinking, and we are talking about strategy #execution not just strategy. Most of the universe exists between great ideas and turnkey solutions. The inventive process is both messy and #dialectical replete with #tension among disparate #perspectives about both the costs and the benefits. The #trajectorial objectives rarely lead to #outcomes that could have been fully anticipated

New York Real Estate Journal asked Hank White, FASLA to offer thoughts on which emerging trend will drive investment and development in 2024. "Re-use explorations of outdated and hard-to-lease #commercial buildings into #residential and other uses will continue. Building #technologies and design #innovations will evolve to invent new forms of #housing, #hospitality, health care and institutional uses and infuse high performing #energy efficient building technologies and best #environmental practices."
