The climate tech space is more accessible than you think, even with less than a year of experience. After the conversation we had with Bas Van Den Brande in our Climate Tech Spotlight episode, we thought it would be useful to share some tips to help you join the space. Here’s a roadmap for you to get there: ✅ Identify your transferable skills: Look at the skills you've developed in your current role and identify how they can be applied to climate tech. (E.g. management, data analysis, and communication are becoming highly invaluable) ✅ Discover your niche: Research the different sectors within climate tech and find your niche – from renewable energy to sustainable agriculture. ✅ Network like your future depends on it (because it might): Connect with industry professionals online and at events. Build relationships and learn from those already making an impact. ✅ Always seek to upskill yourself: Fill any knowledge gaps with targeted courses or workshops. Show potential employers your commitment to the field. ✅ Partner with a recruiter: An experienced climate tech recruiter can open doors to opportunities you might not find on your own, which can greatly help your career transition. And lastly, do what you love! There's always a place for your unique talents in the climate tech space. Want to explore your options? Here's a really useful list of job boards, communities, and more resources for anyone looking for a job in climate and sustainability. I particularly liked discovering this comparison of the Climatebase Fellowship and Terra.do course: https://lnkd.in/gRx43uea Bookmark it!
This is the resource guide I wish I'd had when I started exploring climate solutions. It started as a simple list of climate career resources for myself. But with so many others hungry to learn about climate trends, technologies, markets, and companies, I realized the broader community could benefit from it. If you’re looking for newsletters, job boards, communities, explainers, solution libraries, or other learning resources, you'll find them here. It's inspiring how much innovation and progress are taking place across the ecosystem on all levels – technical, business model, commercial, financial, regulatory, and more. And the sense of shared purpose and camaraderie that permeate this community are what give me even more hope that our collective strength can overcome the challenges of the climate crisis. 💪 Please share with others so we can engage even more talent in the journey! ICYMI: Yesterday's SF Climate Week panel on "Forging Your Path in Climate Tech" was full of insights into what it's really like to make the switch. The thing about rebuilding the entire economy is that it can be overwhelming, daunting, and exciting all at the same time. We're rethinking how we move about, how we feed the world, and the buildings we live in, among other things. Which we need a lot of people, from all sorts of backgrounds, and skillsets. The journey looks a little different for everyone, and our panelists Natalie K., Alicia Harmon O’Meara, Selina Tobaccowala, and Jill Macri shared a lot of actionable advice for making the switch. #ClimateTech #ClimateJobs
Perception: Work on Climate recently found that career switchers wanting to work on climate solutions are often unsure if climate jobs are for people like them or if their skills are useful (research here: https://bit.ly/4bcJyVe) Reality: Climate companies need a variety of roles beyond engineers and scientists (and lots of those too!). Yet, breaking in is daunting and nebulous for most everyone making the switch. Yesterday's SF Climate Week panel on "Forging Your Path in Climate Tech" with Natalie K., Alicia Harmon O’Meara, Selina Tobaccowala, and Jill Macri dropped a lot of sage advice on how to approach your search. Here are the key takeaways: 📝 Get smart on what's going on in climate tech. There are a wealth of resources and learning communities you can tap into: Terra.do, Climatebase, the MCJ Collective podcasts, AirMiners Boot Up, Sightline Climate (CTVC), Climate Draft, Young Professionals in Energy, & #OpenDoorClimate. 💪 Take stock of your skills instead of focusing on titles or roles alone. Tailor your resume, application, and LinkedIn (especially LinkedIn). After you apply, reach out to at least 3 people at your top companies to get to know them and share more about the value you can add. ✔ Know that switching industries isn't linear. You might not land the dream title at your top company straight away, and that's okay. Transitions are full of side-steps, trying out a big company where there are resources to teach you about the sector before you can make the leap and add value at a startup. It's all part of the journey. The biggest takeaway? People who are already working in the climate can't wait to meet you! Most are generous with their time and networks. We're building a massive new economy and need your diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives to go further, faster. If you’re already working in climate or a little further in your career switch — what are other useful resources, communities, or people that have helped you find your way? #SFClimateWeek #ClimateTech #ClimateJobs

I usually take about 3 calls a week with folks looking to break into climate tech. Love getting the chance to help, and also see it is critically important to get more great talent into the climate space. Best hires I've made in my career didn't have the domain expertise. Combo of skills, ambition and grit. If you're really interested in climate, but not sure of the right angle in then just drop a comment and I'll follow up. Also, sharing a very handy guide that André Meurer, Ben Lai and others put together. Link in the comments. #climatetech #innovation #jobseekers #sustainability

Aspiring to break into climatetech? Since Cascade Climate’s launch last week, we’ve received dozens of applications from candidates interested in joining the team. Here are three tips for strengthening your profile for any climate org. 🏋🏾♀️ No candidate has a profile that matches the job description exactly. Be able to articulate strengths you can bring to the team from day one based on transferable skills and the areas where you may need more support to do the job well. For many candidates, this may look like needing specific resources to get up to speed on the relevant products or technologies the company is developing or supporting (mentorship, training, etc.). 🔬If you have a non-technical background, don’t be afraid to do a little extra homework to understand the foundational science of the technology. This may not look like reading technical research papers (although it could), but there are many beginner-friendly podcasts, newsletters, and websites that can help you learn the language quickly. Some of my favorites for CDR are My Climate Journey, This is CDR, CarbonPlan, Carbon180, The Carbon Curve, Reversing Climate Change, and The Great Unwind [links below]. 📈If you are interested in joining an early stage startup but haven’t worked in that environment previously, highlight in your resume and interviews any experience you have implementing or improving processes, gaining buy-in from a variety of stakeholders, and generally taking initiative to ideate and execute(!) on new ideas in whatever context you’ve been working in. This is an exciting time to be working in the climate space. Showing enthusiasm for the mission of an org is helpful, demonstrating clear ability to support that mission is even better. Best of luck & happy holidays!
