Representing Kimcell Ltd I took part in #DorsetCodingDay by Dorset Council UK Digital Dorset and volunteered at Bovington Academy. Was there to help pupils follow the video and notes to code a basic game with Scratch. Here are my observations. Was pleasantly surprised by the kids who were energetic, trying to follow and some helped others out. Amazed at the technology and level of work they are doing as 8 or 9 year olds. They need new screens as I could hardly read their old LCD screens. Although it’s a massive video screen at the front of the computing class, the kids at the back had to constantly walk to the front to read the text from the coding platform. Different capabilities in the class as some could barely log into Google Classroom. Saw one pupil who cracked on and raced ahead of the teacher, got stuck, got frustrated, banging fist onto the table. Teacher made them take a timeout. They came back into the room and didn’t participate again. Disruptive to the class, slightly, but with today’s knowledge.. However, I saw an ability that needs to be nurtured, maybe in a different way, or different environment. Was more than capable in multitasking with the workbook and the development environment but needed help in being able to stop, assess and try again. In a previous world they would have been classed as the naughty kids to be marginalised, but now they can get a diagnosis and hopefully more help. The class size was probably 25 or so. Even with another official classroom helper there it’s like herding cats. I couldn’t do it and recognise there is an impact in getting the best out of everyone, from those that need help and those gifted. If we want the best education system and the best outcomes, the sector needs more resources and respect. I was educated on the day for sure.
