"Apparently customer service wasn't shit enough with real people, now they're ready to plumb new depths with AI" I saw this comment in reference to Google cutting another 30,000 ad department jobs, and I believe this represents the path most companies will take moving forward. I mean think about it, a lot of companies have struggled to improve customer service's poor reputation despite spending heavily on training and management for decades. Now, AI solutions can often perform better for a fraction of the cost with some refinement. Replacing customer service roles with AI is an obvious choice for companies seeking to maximize profits in any capitalist country. If the day-to-day tasks of a job lack any sort of need for authenticity, or are highly repetitive in nature, and don't require all too much EQ, It's a job that's going to get replaced by AI. How do you safeguard yourself from this? Figure out something you can develop subject matter expertise in that requires a human touch, EQ, and authenticity. For now AI, just like say calculators, excels in specific tasks but lacks the ability to innovate or understand underlying principles, a domain reserved for human expertise. While it may automate certain jobs, it also creates new opportunities and demands for skills that AI cannot replicate. Here's some clear, succinct, excellent advice --five easy steps - from NYU Stern's Dean of Students Conor Grennan. And if you're in a terrible rush: 1. Don't fear AI. You don't need tech expertise. AI tools are good at "interacting with humans". If you are too--you’ll do great 2. Experiment. Break down what you, your co-workers, and your employers do. Then experiment with AI and figure out which "tasks can be sped up and quality increased". 3. Lead. Collaborate with colleagues - show them AI's potential-- how it can "brainstorm ideas, write copies, plan events, whatever". It can be both brainstormer and "practical work assistant". 4. You don’t need to be a tech expert. You do not need an AI or machine learning background. Remember, these tools are designed for natural language interaction. If you’re good at interacting with humans, you’ll be amazing at this. 2. Experiment and Share Experiment with AI in your daily tasks. Break down what you actually do. What your co-workers do. What your boss does. It could be as simple as drafting an email or brainstorming marketing slogans. The key here is to show how specific work tasks can be sped up and quality increased. Share these small wins with a trusted colleague and gather feedback. 3. Lead by Example Organize a small team meeting, maybe over lunch, to demonstrate the potential of AI in everyday tasks. Show how AI can brainstorm ideas, write copies, plan events, whatever. The key here is to transform it from a brainstorming tool to a practical work assistant. 4. Educate and Inspire Be the source of knowledge in your office. Stay informed by following resources like McKinsey dot com, The Verge, TechCrunch, etc. BTW- you should be using AI to digest and simplify complex articles so you understand them first. AI and technology are constantly evolving, and staying curious and informed is key. I'm glad more people are starting to pay attention to this and that it is is hitting mainstream publications. AI is starting to take jobs and will start to impact wages as more people become unemployed. While there is no complete solution to this, developing basic generative AI skills as well as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity skills will improve your odds of keeping your job and/or helping you find a new one or starting your own business as AI continues to advance. Many thinkers see a future where most people are their own bosses who are assisted by AIs. These skills will be critical for you to do be able to do that. AI hype has been driven by minority who benefit from it, for some others: either will be replaced by AI or hurt by AI because current AI tech is really dumb and is/will cause damages and harm to users. From this point of view, some law firms would be beneficiaries of AI tech, because there will be more and more class actions against businesses that utilize AI to do dumb things causing damages and harm. ML (Machine Learning), although utilizing same or similar math and tech, serves its purpose which is mainly about prediction.
