#ForensicFriday: Synthetic opioids are making illicit drug use more dangerous than ever, according to Britain’s National Crime Agency. “With nitazenes you can absolutely die the very first time you take it and with nitazenes you very often don’t know you are taking it,” said the director general of the NCA, Graeme Biggar. Nitazenes are often contained in synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists and benzodiazepines, or taken along with other drugs such as heroin, increasing the risk to a wide range of drug users. 💻Explore our broad portfolio of reference and research materials to support forensic examinations and clinical toxicology at https://okt.to/VmBXWG 📰 Read the news at https://okt.to/GKSYyR #SyntheticOpioids #IlliciDrugs #nitazenes

HSA’s Analytical Toxicology Laboratory-Drug Abuse Testing (ATL-DAT) is delighted to announce that we recently published our in-house developed method for multi-drug analysis in hair using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The paper authored by HuiFen Hannah Zhang, Hooi Yan Moy, and Dr Chi Pang Lui, and published in the Drug Testing and Analysis journal details our improved hair analysis method that offers: - Simultaneous analysis of multiple drugs which include opiates, amphetamines, ketamine and cocaine, via a comprehensive procedure involving hair decontamination, pulverization, clean-up using supported-liquid extraction (SLE) and a two-step derivatisation process; - Enhanced efficiency through using semi-automated sample preparation procedure; - Key benefits including faster analysis turnaround time and reduced amount of hair sample required for analysis. This represents a significant step forward as this enhanced method will allow HSA to better support our partner agencies in their ongoing efforts to help keep Singapore drug-free. Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) are a diverse group of synthetic substances created to mimic the effects of prescription or illicit drugs that are often used non-medically. There are various classes of NPS including designer opioids, designer benzodiazepines, synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic stimulants, hallucinogens/dissociatives, and others. Once an NPS has been deemed a controlled substance, often new or modified non-regulated NPS appear. This remains a challenge for regulatory and enforcement agencies, monitoring institutions, clinical and toxicology laboratories, as well as healthcare providers. In this month's clinical update, we will evaluate changes observed in the prevalence of NPS detected at Aegis in 2023. This would be very helpful in ensuring safe supply for people who use drugs. In some countries, testing drugs using reagents can also be done. It might need some training but it’s already being used by non-professionals as well! #TestDrugsNotPeople #HarmReduction
A team of researchers from the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila recently unveiled the E-Tox Point of Care Testing (POCT) device that aims to address gaps in toxicology testing in the country. This device comes in two models: E-Tox-NPS, designed to detect New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) such as ketamine, synthetic cannabinoids, and synthetic cathinones; and E-Tox-PHX, which focuses on detecting pharmaceuticals such as paracetamol, isoniazid, and salicylate poisoning. Drug-Impaired Driving: The Contribution of Emerging and Undertested Drugs by the National Institute of Justice. "In 2007, the National Safety Council (NSC) introduced testing scope and cutoff standardization for impaired driving cases and traffic fatalities to improve testing consistency. Since 2013, it has recommended that forensic toxicology labs regularly test blood for 35 of the most often encountered drugs and metabolites. Referred to as Tier I drugs (Figure below), they are now included as a testing standard in many forensic toxicology labs.[3] Furthermore, these compounds can be detected and confirmed with commonly used analytical instrumentation." #DUI #DWI #forsenic #toxicology #science Kevin Schug Jonathan Thacker Melissa Giguere Zacariah Hildenbrand Ph.D. Edward Westerfield https://lnkd.in/g3Faw63N
