A greener approach for testing the safety of medicines by reducing column dimensions in liquid chromatography. As part of our collaboration with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), our team in Teddington, UK, has developed an alternative analytical method for testing the safety of Solifenacin, a medicine used to treat an overactive bladder. This work highlights the potential for more sustainable practices in analytical chemistry by minimising the dimensions of columns used in liquid chromatography, whilst maintaining the integrity of the pharmacopeial analytical procedure within the adjustments allowed by the chapter on Chromatographic Separation Techniques. The revised method achieves the following: 🧪 Reduces solvent usage by 80% 🧪 Improves run time for analytical testing by 30% Our team in Teddington, UK, plays a crucial role in supporting the MHRA by developing and evaluating analytical methods to ensure the quality of medicines and healthcare products which we rely on every day. These methods are published as legally mandated standards, known as monographs, in the British Pharmacopoeia (BP). This case study complements the recently released Environmental Sustainability Information Pack - British Pharmacopoeia and underscores the commitment of both the MHRA and LGC to achieving carbon net-zero.
