Bleeding is a major cause of death among trauma victims. Around 20,000 people in the UK sustain major trauma injuries every year. For those who survive to reach hospital, over a quarter still die from blood loss. NIHR-funded research on a low cost blood drug - tranexamic acid - to control trauma bleeding has led to a worldwide change in practice and continues to drive wider use. The drug is estimated to save around 400 lives in the UK and over 100,000 lives worldwide each year. The CRASH-2 trial has led to a global change in treatment practices, with tranexamic acid regarded as the best standard of care for severe injury, and reducing traumatic bleeding deaths by a third. Based on CRASH-2 findings, tranexamic acid has been included on the World Health Organisation's list of essential medicines. This list contains the most effective and safe medications to meet the most important needs in a health system. CRASH-2’s practice-changing results paved the way for a new NIHR-funded trials, CRASH-3 and CRASH-4. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the largest NIHR programme and be involved in decisions about the remit and priorities of the programme. As Chair for this committee, you will: ➡️ review research topics relevant to hospital based and specialist care ➡️ engage all members of the committee in discussion ➡️ ensuring clear decisions are made ➡️ supporting the Strategic Commissioning team in the identification and development of potential topics The successful candidate will have experience of evidence-based practice (in a senior clinical role in the NHS). We've awarded a total of £1.8 million in research funding to 4 innovative projects aimed at helping to reduce drug use among young people. This is the second phase of our Innovation Fund to Reduce Demand for Illicit Substances. Our new funding call for the NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARCs) is now open. The NIHR ARCs undertake high-quality applied health, public health and social care research with a focus on generalisable learning at a regional and national level. We have handed multi-million pound funding to UK Dementia Research Institute (UKDRI) to advance research and deliver new solutions for people living with or at risk of #dementia. The funding will also cover the development of treatments for related #neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s and motor neuron disease. We have given the UKDRI an initial £20 million. Also covered by the funding is training the next generation of “delivery scientists and health practitioners” in dementia, and new AI and data initiatives to accelerate the discovery of new therapies.
