Dr. Victor Fung: Hong Kong has potential to become ESG education hub for fashion sector According to statistics, a truckload of discarded clothes is burnt or sent to landfill every second around the world and the global fashion industry produces nearly 20% of waste water and about 10% of carbon emissions globally. A sustainable fashion industry would go a long way in alleviating the adverse impact of climate change. Dr. Victor Fung, Li & Fung Honorary Chairman, believes that Hong Kong has the potential to become a sustainability education hub for apparel makers and firms in the fashion industry supply chain. “We can set up a whole series of courses and make an industry out of training in Hong Kong,” Dr. Fung shared in a recent interview with South China Morning Post SCMP, “we can create yet another industry; it is one that the world needs, and one that will put Hong Kong in a highly visible position globally.” Once Hong Kong becomes a training base for sustainability in the fashion industry, the long-term goal should be to set up globally acceptable standards for sustainable manufacturing practices that can be applied to thousands of factories around the world. Key points: + Li & Fung recently organized a workshop on integrating sustainability in supply chains, part of their fashion tech summit. + The global fashion industry produces significant waste and emissions, highlighting the need for sustainable practices. + Fung aims to establish globally acceptable standards for sustainable manufacturing in factories worldwide. + Charles Fine, professor at MIT Sloan School of Management, supports this vision: "Hong Kong is a hub where it can all come together. You have manufacturing [taking place] all around Hong Kong; you have the knowledge and you have the motivation." + The IFC - International Finance Corporation provided a US$75 million loan to Li & Fung and Air8 Finance to support sustainable supply chain initiatives. Who is going to pay to make the fashion supply chain more sustainable? That was the main question discussed at the Innovation Forum in Amsterdam. From our team was Andrea Spadaccini, Sustainability Success Manager, present to join this conversation at the Sustainable Apparel & Textile Conference. Here are his insights👇 It's often said that making the fashion supply chain more sustainable requires investment from various stakeholders, including fashion brands, manufacturers, consumers, and governments. But in reality and as discussed at the Conference, the consumer is unwilling to pay a premium price for more sustainable options. Governments play a vital role and according to EURATEX - European Apparel and Textile Confederation, the EU is facing 16 apparel & textile legislation already. However, governments are mostly asking for impact reduction via regulations at this point. So the choice of who pays to make the fashion supply chain more sustainable is down to brands and manufacturers. Achieving a more sustainable fashion supply chain will require collaboration and investment from them. 💡 That's why the heart of our platform is to affordably and scalably streamline the data sharing across textile companies, manufacturers and brands to accurately and credibly set and hit impact reduction targets. In this article, Shen discusses the importance of sustainability in the fashion industry, focusing on H&M company. The fashion industry has to consider their usage of materials to keep environmental pollution down. In supply chain, the usage of the kind of material being used is very important, just as how it is recycled. Sustainability of a company is reflected upon how they can keep costs down. The sustainability buzzword has been actively thrown around for a while now, so much so that it may be losing some significance. The good thing is that there has been some decent progress in integrating better materials and processes, owing to the growing media discourse, environmental goals, and legislations. We have seen this growth for TENCEL™ in close-to-skin & home applications in India and Thailand.   Though since pandemic, the global markets haven’t really caught a breath.
