I've been in the recruiting business for 15 years, and I've never seen it be as difficult to land something as it is now. Unless he wants to go the agency route - in which case his background shouldn't have a bearing on his ability to land, and that's where the recruiting gigs are at the moment.

Perhaps utilize typical messages? If overqualified, speak to being able to "turn-key" once on board, over-deliver and being passionate about being able to do so. If underqualified, speak to being able to effectively and efficiently learn something new.
