You achieved 80% of your goal ---> success or failure? It depends... It's almost New Year's and there are going to be a lot of new goals set in the coming weeks, so let's talk goal setting.... Goal setting is always a fine line to walk - aim too low and it doesn't spur action, aim too high and it demoralizes. It's tough to find the right balance, especially if you're new to an organization or if it's a personal goal in an area you've never attempted. At Task Force Dagger Special Operations Foundation we recently launched a "Double Your Impact" campaign where a generous donor offered to match all donations through the end of 2023 and let us select the goal level. Side note - what an incredible opportunity and truly humbling recognition of the impact our team continues to make. As the new Executive Director, I was unsure of where we should set the mark. Do we go for a stretch goal or do we set it at a level we're confident we can hit? $50k? $100k? Honestly, $100k seemed like far more than we'd be able to raise over such a short time. But, knowing that each and every dollar raised will make an impact for those struggling in our special ops community, we went big and put the yard stick at $150,000 - far surpassing what's been raised in previous EOY campaigns. With a couple of days left, I'm thrilled to announce that we've surpassed $123k dollars in support of special operators and their families and I can't thank our generous donors enough for joining us in our mission to "Do More in '24!" So, when you're setting your own professional and personal goals this New Years, remember that 80% of a stretch goal is a huge win over just achieving a lay up. Go for it. It'll give you and your organization a purpose and focus to push towards a target you wouldn't have thought possible. CALLING IN MY NETWORK!! After the murder of George Floyd, so many companies and funders were grabbing every opportunity to throw money at nonprofits like Code2040 to prove that they "aren't racist." Well, it's been 4 years, and with the attempted erasure of DEI and initiatives associated with it- those companies have recoiled back into their racist and oppressive ways. Black and Brown folks continue to be underrepresented, dehumanized, and oppressed both in their daily livelihood and their work. Especially in tech spaces, we need Black and Brown people more than ever. Code2040 is committed to "figuring it out," the same way people like us are always expected to —but our mission remains the same. We are activating and mobilizing the largest racial equity community in tech. Our goal: to dismantle the structural barriers that keep our Black and Latinx emerging tech leaders from leading the innovation economy. thursday thoughts If you are given the opportunity to e-pitch to a funder, please check these three things before you speak. 1. Your body is centered and facing forward. (**no awkward angels) Frame that beautiful self. 2. Shift your computer so you are forward lit and NOT back lit. Bad lighting will cost you fundraising dollars. 3. If you have a ring light, use it. You should look great, feel great and shine that confidence into the screen to raise that money. Shark Tank for Non-Profits! Since yesterday, I am imagining this show where non-profits are pitching their work and seeking corpus and working capital. The questions would be same. 1. What is unique and valuable? what is domain expertise of founders? 2. Target segment, market opportunity, product-market fit 3. Organisation structure, team capability 4. Operating model - people, process, technology 5. Detailed costing 6. Marketing plans and so on... Then the donors decide on funding... It is just an imagination, but if non-profits can think, build and pitch like those entrepreneurs - their funding can dramatically improve!
