Cebu ports handled 1.84% more cargoes in 2023 to 67.52 million metric tons, up from the 66.30 million mt in 2022, according to updated data from Cebu Port Authority (CPA). The final figure is so much less than the initially reported 4.4% volume increase released in January. Domestic cargoes grew 3.3% to 53.844 million metric tons (mt) in 2023 from 52.131 million mt in 2022, based on the latest data. Cebu Pacific’s net income soared 108% to P2.2 billion in the first quarter of 2024 from P1.078 billion year-on-year. The cargo business also showed improvement from last year as Cebu Pacific carried 35 million kilos of cargo, 16% higher year-on-year. Vietnam route: Ho Chi Minh's shipping space is severely out of stock in the middle of the year, and Ho Chi Minh's shipping space is also relatively tight in the second half of the year. The freight rate is expected to be maintained, and COSCO CV2 can currently be arranged on 4.21/4.28. There is still a small amount of space in the mid-term shipping schedule of Haiphong. China market highlights as of 01/11: 1.   Omissions & cancellation, not seen the major changes yet from previous announcements of major carrier early Dec. 23’, neither further cut nor add-back of services. 2.   Rates, are spiked, but, a) not of all trades, b) not to “highs not seen since early 2022.”and more importantly, c) they are pretty divergent … WC spot rates, vary from 2900 to 5000/FEU, while Asia-Europe rate is even more fraught, ranging from 4800 to 7000/FEU, while W/E MED trade is basically flat with last week(above are based on 10 F/F quotes for week 3 departure vessels of 3 alliances, ex China base ports) 3.   Cargo strength ... Such a big rate spread for one particular week, suggest the Cargo Strength is not as strong as the industry news, or freight indices is suggesting. 4.   Free Time, NANSHA terminal (Jan.10, 2024) announced to offer additional 7 days free storage for outbound and inbound dry laden, in terminal, effective from 15/01 valid through to 15/03. ... Obviously NANSHA is encouraging carriers to create roll pool. It gives further credence to point 3. 5.   Trend-line, rate will peak in week 5, I don’t think the volume strength can gain hang-on over week 6. but MED will remain a major challenge after holidays. 6.   Space, not a problem to handle pre-holiday rush. China BSA increase, all trades, probably 10-15% or more. BSA is shifted from SEA, because of stronger volume, “a bigger equipment pool, more reliable feeder connections”, and eventually the resulting “lower shortfall” against BSA and, also  from Japn, Korea, for a shorter rotation, on a carriers’ trade management perspective. 7.   Equipment is expected to be enough to support pre-holiday surges. Till now no shortage of major carriers has been spotted, except Ningbo/Qingdao where some carriers are reported “40HC being tight” for week3. Trend-line: Conventionally, it takes at least 4 weeks to get through the valley season after CNY holidays, 4 weeks is long enough for carrier to rebuild the inventory. Most carriers have been cut back the free time for U.S inbound laden, since week 51, 2023. 30-45 days is a typical scenario for carrier to get a box back to Asia, from WC. The supplies supplies should be pretty aligned with demand from week 9 -13 for this industry to ramp up the vol. after holiday.
