The best way to send a message - well done to all
150 PEOPLE WALKED THE BOY TO SCHOOL After a Jewish boy in Toronto's Clanton Park public school was bullied for being Jewish. Toronto's Jewish community came to walk him to school and stand by his side. The Jewish community should be proud of itself. The school district and leaders, less so. via Aliza Schrier

Schools should be safe, neutral spaces for those of any faith or none at all, where everyone is treated with the same tolerance and respect. We have all seen how the conflict in the Middle East has spiralled into violence and intimidation here in the UK. The Community Security Trust said in its report last week that there were reports of 4,103 anti-Semitic incidents in the UK last year, nearly double the previous record in 2021. Too many of those have taken place across education settings. There has, for instance been an inexcusable rise in antisemitic attacks on Jewish students in our universities and groups that monitor hate crimes say there has been an increasing number of flare ups on campuses across the country. I heard about some of these directly from students who are part of the #StandWithUs campaign recently in the UK House of Lords. I want to say to any teachers who are faced with unacceptable behaviour that we back you. We back you to take the action you think is necessary to preserve the calm and welcoming atmosphere of your school and we back you to be clear with parents if that is necessary. All our schools, colleges and universities are expected to challenge any kind of harassment or bullying behaviour and take a strong stand not just against antisemitism but against all forms of discrimination. And that means calling it out whenever it raises its ugly head. Silence is not an option. I know all our universities and schools are working hard to tackle antisemitism, but we want to give them more support. I have been working with Gillian Keegan and Robert Halfon MP to go further, which is why we have put £7million into tackling antisemitism over the next three years in universities, colleges, and schools. We’ve also allocated an extra £3m of funding to the Community Security Trust to increase security measures at Jewish schools, colleges, and nurseries and provided more than £3m of funding for five anti-bullying organisations. These include projects to tackle hate-related bullying on the basis of race and faith. We hope that this funding will help all students to feel safe where they learn, and that their teachers and lecturers know that they have our support to address anti-semitism. #antisemitism #schoolleadership

In the light of the events of the past two weeks, many schools will likely start the school year with conversations about communities, inclusion, belonging, respect and anti-racism. If you're planning assemblies and lessons around these topics, you may want to revisit a blog post from Omena O, where she shares the first 3 steps to anti-racist teaching practice. https://loom.ly/9vrmPvM

When considering university choices, there are many factors often discussed. One overlooked element, racism (in its many forms), should be added to the conversation. Christina McDade shares her perspective here. #collegecounselor #universityadmissions #bestfit #findyourplace #wheredoyouwanttogo
Christina McDade, counsellor at Lincoln Community School, discusses racism in education, advocating for honest conversations and how she empowers students to seek universities that value their unique potential and contributions. Deputy Headteacher Pastoral Care and Inclusion | Safeguarding Deputy Designated Officer | English teacher | Mental health first aider | Published Author | Guest Speaker
Three reasons why restorative justice is one my go to pastoral practices? 1) It helps to establish truth. Sometimes, the only way to get differing parties to reach honesty is to have them face each other and engage in calm dialogue. 2) It allows those who have caused hurt to repair damage and victims to begin to heal from any wrong. 3) In the long run it saves time. This is slightly counterintuitive because on the one hand it may appear time consuming to have everybody sit down together to engage in dialogue. But imagine trying to talk to each individual one by one. Can you imagine the conflicting stories you might hear every time? This will only lead to more time spent as you try to make sense of the confusion. If you’d like more details on how to conduct a restorative justice conversation, I’ve written a longer article which you can find on my blog here: https://lnkd.in/dgiFdgHj

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡 Today, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the painful history of residential schools and honor the Indigenous children who never made it home. It’s a reminder of how much we still have to learn and unlearn. This day isn’t just about remembering—it’s about listening, showing up, and committing to real change. Wearing orange today is one small way we can stand with Indigenous communities, but the work doesn’t stop there. Let’s all take time to ask ourselves how we can be better allies and support true healing and reconciliation, today and every day. 🧡 #TruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #OrangeShirtDay #ListeningAndLearning #StandingTogether
