It’s not every day Healthy Harold gets to visit Queensland Parliament, but this week… Australia’s favourite giraffe, helped celebrate a milestone - 45 years of the Life Education program having a positive impact on generations of children through vital health and safety education. We also shone the spotlight on our innovative Stand Up for Respect campaign, part of a new evidence-based bullying and violence prevention program empowering children in Years 5 and 6 to advocate for respectful relationships for themselves and others. It was wonderful to take some of the 5,500 upstander pledges to parliament … representing heartfelt messages from children across Queensland calling for a kinder, more respectful community. Four outstanding students - the 2024 Queensland Junior Upstander winners - were recognised on the night for their leadership and bravery in standing up for other students who have experienced bullying. After months of planning, it was wonderful to see the night come to fruition with CEO Michael Fawsitt, Life Ed Qld Board members and staff joined by co-patrons Hon Dr Anthony Lynham and Hon Rob Borbidge, Health Minister Hon Shannon Fentiman MP, Opposition Health Minister Ros Bates MP RN, other MPs from both major parties, special guests Olympian Brooke Hanson OLY OAM, talented singer-songwriter Jo Davie and valued donor supporters. And not forgetting... Australia's biggest influencer, Healthy Harold who starred in many selfies. Here's to the next 45 years of Life Ed making a difference in the lives of Queensland children.

On Saturday The Courier-Mail highlighted some key statistics from our latest survey on bullying in Queensland schools. ➡ 19.3% of students experience regular physical bullying. ➡ Almost 30% face hurtful online comments, with 12% dealing with it multiple times a month. ➡ 51% of students feel they can't reduce bullying at their school. These statistics are concerning, but we’re determined to bring about positive change. Through our Stand Up for Respect campaign thousands of students are already committing to make a difference. Because together, we can take action to help put an end to bullying. 💪

A generation of children is growing up with social media and the ‘like’ button and there’s growing concern about the impact that’s having on young minds. Although social media apps are great for connectivity, they may also expose children and teens to appalling cyberbullying, viral self-harm dares, sextortion threats, and content promoting distorted ideals around body image. Recently, we’ve seen AI technology being used to taunt bullying targets, further amplifying the impact of bullying and causing even greater distress for victims. Life Ed is proud to play a key role in educating young people on how to navigate cyberbullying, digital reputation and online behaviour. This year, 120,000 Queensland children will participate in Life Ed modules relating to respectful relationships alone, helping to address the problems of violence and bullying. Education in schools is vital, but parents need support too, to cope with a rapidly changing world. In our latest Life Ed podcast for parents, leading cybersafety educator Brett Lee discusses the recent debate around raising the social media user age to 16. “If we could normalise in our community, that children who are 13,14 and 15 don’t use social media, the effects are going to be incredible,” he says. Drawing on his practical experience as a cyber investigator, Brett explains how parents can stay up to date, ensure their child’s online safety and manage the risks of social media.
