Share your secret to health aging - NPR wants to know! Trish D'Antonio shared a link to an NPR story with our team yesterday, at the end there is a form asking for the public to share their secrets to healthy aging. I've shared my reflections below. I encourage you to share your wisdom as well and I hope one of your tips is about language change! Here is the link to the story/form: https://lnkd.in/gkYqCydi. What are your secrets to living a long and healthy life? What do you recommend to others? What do you wish you’d known earlier?* Through my work with The National Center to Reframe Aging work I've come to see the importance of the language we use around aging generally and our own aging process - research shows that simply our perception of aging has the ability to impact our life span by 7.5 years (thank you, Becca Levy and team)! This professional work has had a huge impact on me personally. A handful of examples I hope others can learn from: 1. I'm much more intentional about the birthday cards I purchase, avoiding the ones that make fun of age and seeking out the ones that celebrate aging. (s/o Jan Golden, founder of Age-Friendly Vibes)! 2) I'm much more likely to call out subtle ageism when I hear it. 3) I work hard to embrace signs of my own aging . For example, when someone notes my growing number of grey hairs, I make sure to respond affirmatively vs. defensively (e.g., "I know! Thank you, I call them my wisdom hairs or my natural highlights"). 4) I continue to prioritize intergenerational friendship. Keeping in touch with mentors, inviting people of all ages to social gatherings, prioritizing attending events at my church where I know I can cultivate these friendships. 5) Encourage my friends and family to celebrate age vs. denigrate it. I'm extremely grateful for my work, as these are lessons I've garnered much earlier on in my career in comparison to many others in my age cohort. Fear of aging is deeply embedded into our cultural fabric and I'm hopeful that these lessons are helping to weave a new pattern for myself and those in my life.

#thursday #wellbeing Is Graceful Aging an oxymoron? This was the question Sharon S. Rajkumar, PhD posed to us and Dr. Ranjan Shetty cleverly answered, “As oxymoron as Happily Married”. Jokes apart, the key is to live gracefully at any age. Aging is the one journey we can’t avoid walking on. So the question to ask ourselves when we see the advertisements selling magical potions and solutions for looking like 20 when you are 40, or age reversal is which part of our lives do we want to preserve as we move through the years? The skin and the hair are not wrong choices. What we choose is what we choose. There are three A’s to work with - Awareness Being aware of what we are trying to preserve with age. The why can come later. Being conscious of what matters will bring its own journey. Acceptance It is easy to say one has to accept aging. But that’s hard. To look at what we are finding hard to accept is more doable. The interesting part about aging is while some parts slow down, other parts deepen. When we learn to walk, we stop crawling. Can we accept those new things and welcome them? Attitude One can write a whole book how we as a society glorify youth and build fear about aging. Attitude is a two way street. How we regard ones older than us and those younger than us matters. As a panelist, I was acutely aware how I never gathered in crowds like this in my 20’s or 30’s and talk about how we handle that decade gracefully. Interesting, no? Any thoughts on why we don’t do that? Thank you Happiest Health for the opportunity to muse on this topic. #aging #holistichealth #awareness #acceptance #attitude

"You look so young for your age!" We’ve all heard it before, right? It’s meant to be a compliment, but underneath, there’s this unspoken idea that looking older is something to avoid. But let’s be real for a moment: Aging is not the enemy. In fact, it’s a reflection of: ✅ Strength, ✅ Resilience, and ✅ Every challenge we’ve overcome. For years, I gave everything to others and put myself last. It wasn’t until serious health issues knocked on my door that I made a change—and this shift wasn’t about chasing youth. Instead, it was about something far more powerful: regaining my energy, vitality, and zest for life. 💫 And guess what? That’s when everything started to change. I stopped caring about society’s unrealistic standards and began embracing my own journey. The truth is, aging is a privilege. 🌿 It’s not about the lines or marks on our skin—it’s about the stories they tell. Each one is a reminder of the strength we’ve built along the way. Here’s what I want you to remember: 👉 Looking older isn’t what we should fear. What’s truly limiting is letting society define our worth by appearances. 👉 Let’s redefine aging together—it's not about looking younger, it’s about feeling vibrant, empowered, and confident in every stage of life. So, how do you feel about aging? Do you feel pressured to look younger, or have you embraced your age and found your own version of beauty? Let’s start a conversation below! 👇 Call me anytime at 714-457-1713, or set up a Zoom call with me here: https://lnkd.in/gv_Vpc6q. #HealthyAging #WomenOver50 #Wellness #WomenEmpowerment #AgingWell #SelfCare

Pro-Aging: The Anti Anti-Aging Movement is Here For too long, we've lived in a world obsessed with youth. From magazine covers to billboards, the message has been clear: aging is something to be feared and fought against. But here's the truth: internalizing ageist stereotypes is actually harmful to our health. How we perceive aging directly influences how we experience it. Aging is a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we embrace pro-aging, we celebrate the wisdom and experiences that come with getting older. We focus on what aging adds to our lives and not what it takes away. Studies show that a positive attitude towards aging can lead to a more fulfilling life and even extend our longevity. Pro-aging isn't just a trend; it's a powerful mindset shift. As Marc Freedman, founder of Encore, emphasizes, “The most pressing question for the future is not how we can keep from growing old, but how we can grow old better.” The benefits of a pro-aging mindset are significant. Research has proven it helps us live longer, reduces disability, and encourages proactive health measures. A positive outlook can boost memory and protect our hearts. Dr. Daniel Amen explains that negative thoughts about aging can degrade crucial brain areas, affecting our cognitive and motor functions. By shifting our mindset, we not only improve our health but also enrich our lives. Ready to be anti anti-aging and celebrate the journey and the wisdom that comes with living an inhabited life? Aging isn’t about losing youth; it’s about gaining perspective, clarity and wisdom. Pro-aging is the smart choice for a healthier, happier, more fulfilling life. Celebrate every chapter of your story. Ashton Applewhite says it well, “Ageism is a prejudice against our future selves.”

Tiredness of life is becoming a prevalent phenomenon in Western societies, particularly among healthy, older adults. The aging process in these regions often triggers feelings of isolation, purposelessness, and invisibility. Interestingly, cross-cultural observations indicate that attitudes toward aging significantly impact well-being in old age. Discovering opportunities for personal growth and unexpected benefits in later stages of life can be instrumental in combating existential tiredness. "Your 40's are good. Your 50s are great. Your 60s are fab. And 70 is f*@king awesome!" -Helen Mirren Who of us doesn't angst over aging? I've listened to friends of my son's in their 20's and early 30's saying, "I'm so old now!" Sounds crazy to us, right? One of the challenges of midlife is reckoning with our own age amidst those younger and older than us. We angst over reaching our goals. We angst over feeling our life is passing us by. We angst over feeling relevant. Here's some fascinating research to inspire us to adopt a positive perspective on aging: Yale psychologist and researcher in the field of aging, Dr. Becca Levy, has found in over 30 years of research that when people shift their mindset on aging from negative to positive, they gain seven and a half more years of life. 7 and 1/2 yrs more life! Positive thoughts and feelings about being right where you are in the spectrum of your life improves our health physically, reduces stress and it's fall out, and even reduces the likelihood of developing dimentia. Helen Mirren is a great role model for aging. Role models inspire us to consider what's possible. How do you maintain a positive attitude toward aging? What about aging challenges you? I'm Gail, a midlife reinvention coach. I help women from 40-70+ to make the most of where they're at to live a life they love. DM for a free session to explore your reinvention possibilities! #positiveaging #longevity #midlifewomen #positivemindset
