Last Thursday evening we brought together a panel of engineers, clinician-engineers, and surgeons involved in engineering/device projects—to discuss ways and challenges of meeting and collaborating across professions. In fact, if you skipped the introductions at the session, it might have been hard to tell who the engineers are, and who the clinicians are! 😂 Indeed, the interdisciplinary nature of our work is becoming so intertwined that the lines defining our professions are blurring. As for key takeaways at the session, two things stuck out for me: 1. Having the right attitude and mindset. And that is to keep an open mind. This open-mindedness we speak of extends beyond experimentation and iterations (in fact these come at a later stage), but to start with—being open and willing to go out of our usual clinical/engineering settings. Our profession should be a tool, not a boundary. Joined by passion and purpose, we are more alike than we think. So, what's stopping us from mingling and sharing? 2. Building a supportive ecosystem for #innovation. That’s where education and awareness come in. The more individuals advocate for innovation and collaboration, vocalising their vision and goals for improvement and impact, the greater the awareness. And this shall in turn attract support, creating new avenues for resources, expertise, and funding opportunities. Last but not least, on the topic of #support: Having a strong support system also means being #grateful to having one and showing appreciation to those contributing to your project. As such, I cannot be more thankful to our esteemed panelists: Michael Girard, Dr Ian Loh, Danny Tng, John Ng, and Shaoying Huang for graciously sharing your insights.
