Hermès Heir, 80, Wants to Adopt His Gardener So He Can Leave Billions to Him When I read this news, it naturally reminded me of the famous Chauncey Gardiner, in ‎Jerzy Kosiński’s novel ‘Being There’, which was brilliantly represented by Peter Sellers. Well, this gardener, a 51-year-old Moroccan immigrant, Abdel Jamal, (not his real name) would be in line for a significant portion of the fashion house scion's $11 billion fortune. According to Fortune, Nicholas Puech is the largest individual shareholder of Hermès stock. An unmarried, childless 80-year-old recluse and heir to the Hermès fortune wants to adopt his former gardener. The situation is unfolding now in Valais, Switzerland. Puech wants to pass on his wealth to a man the newspapers are calling Abdel Jamal, pursuing the adoption since October 2022. Puech, who owns homes in Switzerland and Spain, reportedly cut himself off from the outside world during the COVID pandemic. As he did, he is said to have grown closer to the handyman, his young wife (who also works for Puech as a cleaner), and their children. Puech has reportedly referred to the couple as his "adopted son and daughter-in-law”. Puech, reported to be in good health and of sound mind, had agreed in 2011 to sign over his inheritance to his Isocrate Foundation, which he created to combat misinformation and support journalism. In February, he tried to terminate that inheritance pact in a handwritten note to his attorneys. He claims to have been misled about the foundation, believing he'd be able to still control his assets. The Isocrate Foundation will have to agree to the pact termination. However, they have opposed it while leaving the door open for a discussion with its founder and president. So far, the adoption process is still under consideration by Valais authorities. If it came through, the heir would be entitled to at least 10 percent of Puech's estate. Have you seen Lyle's Golden Syrup's first logo rebrand in 140 years❓ After becoming the Guinness World Records holder for having the world’s oldest logo, Lyle’s dead lion swarmed by flies logo has been replaced on their plastic bottles with a more stylised version of a lion’s head with a single bee above it. However, their syrup tins have retained their original logo. The syrup company hopes their rebrand will better appeal to the modern consumer market. “The Garden of Time”; the Irony of this year’s Met Gala🙄😅 The theme, "The Garden of Time," celebrates the Costume Institute's upcoming exhibition, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." A visually stunning exploration of the fragility and ephemerality of fashion, the exhibition features around 250 nature-themed garments and accessories, described as a "celebration of clothing and fashion so fragile that it can't ever be worn again." As we marvel at the intricate designs and delicate embellishments showcased at the Met Gala, we must also confront the stark reality of our industry's impact on the environment. The garments paraded on the red carpet will only ever be worn once, destined to languish in museum archives rather than being enjoyed and cherished. As we celebrate the artistry of fashion, we must also acknowledge our responsibility to the planet. The Met Gala serves as a reminder of the urgent need for change in an industry that too often prioritises profit over sustainability. As a fashion designer and lover myself, indulging in the spectacle of the Met Gala each year is one of my guilty pleasures; though, this year’s theme felt too ironic to ignore. Wearing Crocs (casual clog-like shoe made of foam) or other casual clothing in the parliamentary chambers may be seen as disrespectful by some, as it undermines the reverence that should be associated with the role. We understand that times have changed, and comfort is a priority, but let's not forget the significance of symbolism and the message it sends. Our politicians should be mindful of the image they project and the impact it has on different generations. While it's crucial to connect with real people and be relatable, it's equally important to uphold the integrity and dignity of the office they hold.
