There are many reasons for nurses’ high levels of burnout, and nurses aren’t optimistic that this year will be any better than last year — and more than one-third of them are "extremely likely" to change jobs, according to a new survey.   "They are asked to work longer hours with less resources for providing care. I facilitated a session yesterday with experienced ICU nurses,  on 'What stops you from speaking up at work?'.  We want to create workplaces where everyone feels safe, valued, heard and that all opinions, ideas and voices matter. The evidence is clear- Incivility/ Bad behaviour in the workplace has a significant impact on individuals wellbeing, team functioning and ultimately patient outcomes and experience. Even mild rudeness experienced or witnessed, might stop you from speaking up to that person in the future. This is not new news; it is widely known, reported and something that everyone unfortunately experiences in some form every week. We need to do better. Imagine if we were all 1% kinder to each other every week. That's just over 30% kinder by the end of the 2024! Today marks the end of Nurse's Week. I reposted this article to reinforce my opinion that a corporate focus on workplace nurse survivability will provide a sustainable boost in morale, better employee retention AND improved patient experience scores.
