Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday's name is a portmanteau of the words "June" and "nineteenth", as it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Although this date commemorates enslaved people learning of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation, this only applied to former Confederate states. There remained legally enslaved people in states that never seceded from the Union. Today, we commemorate #Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history and the long and painful era of enslavement. Though the Emancipation Proclamation took effect on January 1, 1863, ostensibly freeing those enslaved in Confederate States, Juneteenth marks the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reaching the most distant corners of Confederate territory with Union troops arriving in Galveston Bay, Texas on June 19, 1865. Meanwhile, the Thirteenth Amendment would still be necessary to end slavery throughout the United States. Juneteenth is a celebration of #emancipation, #resilience, and the enduring spirit of the African American community. It's a day to reflect on the progress made and the work still needed to achieve true #equality and #justice in all aspects of life, including healthcare. Today, many people in the United States are celebrating this country's independence from monarchy. And yet we are not free. Not free from racism. Not free from patriarchy. Not free from warmongers. Not free from corporate greed. Not free from income inequality. Not free from exploitation. Not free from microplastics. Not free from police brutality. Not free from the prison-industrial complex. Not free from media companies that fan the flames of division so they can monetize our anger and fear. Not free from elected representatives who represent themselves more than the electorate. Not free from special interest groups, both here and abroad, that are actively subverting the foundational principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution of the United States, and Bill of Rights. If we can ever achieve our independence from all those forces, not just a silly king, it will truly be a day of celebration. 🫶

Today is Juneteenth - America's second Independence Day. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times.  Juneteenth is a day that commemorates when slavery finally ended in the United States, 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. President Joe Biden made the once-regional southern holiday a federal holiday in 2021. Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a resolution in 2020 calling upon Floridians to honor Juneteenth. “Juneteenth is an important opportunity to honor the principles of the Declaration of Independence and celebrate the achievements and contributions African Americans have made, and continue to make, in Florida and across our Nation," the resolution read. Each year, I am delighted to see an increasing number of Municipalities, Businesses, and other Organizations that are commemorating Juneteenth. A federal holiday since 2021, I'm sure there are many who mentally (or physically) roll their eyes and ask what's the big deal; never realizing the big deal it is to the African Americans who work with them. According to Darryl Heller, Director of the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, "June 19 is the day that Union troops entered Galveston, Texas, and informed some 200,000 enslaved people that they were actually free and no longer subject to the coerced labor of their former masters. And this is significant because it is often considered to be the date that the last enslaved people were emancipated in the United States." Heller continues, "However, it is important to dispel several myths about Juneteenth so that we can more accurately celebrate it. The first is that it is often said that Juneteenth occurred almost two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, but we have to remember that the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t free all of the slaves. It only impacted states that were in rebellion against the United States and, importantly, it was unenforceable until Union troops arrived. The second myth that is important to dispel is that Juneteenth itself, even though it occurred later than emancipation for many enslaved people, didn’t actually mark the end of slavery in the United States. Slavery in the United States was embedded in our Constitution and was a legal construct. So, full emancipation and the end of slavery did not happen until December of 1865 with the ratification of the 13th Amendment, almost six months after Juneteenth." Although Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most US Citizens.

On this day in 1865, the 13th Amendment was ratified, spelling the official end of slavery in the United States, eight long months after the close of the Civil War. A victory against an oppressive system, this moment marked the culmination of a centuries-long struggle. At the start of the war, sentiments in the North varied, with some cautiously refraining from labeling it as a crusade against slavery. However, as the conflict intensified, perspectives began to change. President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in September 1862, redirecting the war's purpose from mere reunification to the resolute destruction of slavery. An amendment to abolish slavery was first proposed in 1863 and passed by the Senate in April 1864. Lincoln's reelection set the stage for passage of the 13th Amendment in the House in January 1865, initiating the journey toward ratification. On December 6, 1865, when Georgia ratified the 13th Amendment, the institution of slavery legally ceased to exist in the United States. As we navigate the complexities of the present and aspire to a more inclusive future, we take a moment today to celebrate the victories of the past. Drawing inspiration from the resilience that has brought us this far, we acknowledge that the road ahead may be challenging.
