The CMI Can Manufacturers Institute and the HCPA Household & Commercial Products Association, with the support of industry sponsors, launched the Aerosol Recycling Initiative in May 2022. This week the Executive Summary was released ahead of the a white paper that will be released in May 2024, sharing the Initiative's findings and future plans. One component of the work, hosted by Recycle Aerosol, LLC , gathered and analyzed the actual contents of over 900 post-consumer aerosol cans from selected MRFs, bringing previously lacking information forward. Data from the Aerosol Recycling Initiative and elsewhere will help drive decisions to achieve more aerosol recycling, safely and sustainably. Simply stated, more (aerosol) recycling begets better recycling, which begets more recycling. https://lnkd.in/ec5EBm8G

Yesterday the European Parliament voted in favour of adopting more ambitious recyclability measures in the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR). Together with EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM, FEVE – the European Container Glass Federation and Metal Packaging Europe (MPE) we applaud this step towards a more #CircularEconomy. Stronger criteria, definitions and targets for recyclability will support materials that are truly recyclable, and mitigate against substitution by those that are difficultly so. #circularchampions #recyclability #performancegrades Read the full statement from the Permanent Materials Alliance: https://lnkd.in/eVnaPejd

Feels like a lot of industries are going to have their ‘post office moment’ - where we begin to understand how greed, lies, corruption and malicious lobbying run rampant when business leaders have no accountability and excessive incentives to make profits over all else. How do we encourage people within industry to come forward and get these lies out there more quickly and how do we get the people in power to act rather than be complacent or even complicit?! Is it really too much to ask in an advanced society that the capitalist system serve the people rather than the other way around? If government can’t put in place the basic checks and balances that keep businesses from harming society from Plastics to fossil fuels and social media to chemicals - what is the point of the lot of them?!

There are a lot of “unknowables” in the future of recycling. Our industry is huge, complex and heavily influenced by factors that are both unpredictable and outside our control. While we may not be able to predict 2024 scrap metal prices, we’re keeping our eye on broader industry trends around things like recycling technology and potential legislation that could make a meaningful impact on our industry. https://bit.ly/3HG3NOm
