The broader impact of Bias in AI!
Yesterday, I had an electrifying experience attending the seminar “Avoiding bias in AI” at the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (sitem-insel). #oncology, #medicaldevice, #AI, #innovation, #entrepreneurship #bigdata. I can't express enough how inspired I was by the incredible lineup of speakers in this unique space.
Berna Özdemir's talk (Bern University Hospital and #ESMO Gender Medicine Task Force) left me speechless. Her research is a must-know for medical affairs professionals in oncology. Gender bias in cancer research, from cell lines to clinical trials, impacts treatment guidelines. The failure of our research to reveal sex differences in the toxicity and efficacy of cancer therapies can have life-threatening effects. Let's have the courage to spread the word and shake things up.
Congratulations to Virginia Richter, who will become the first woman Rector of the University of Bern this year and who opened the event with a fantastic lecture. Saniye Güsler Corat, co-founder of NoBiasAI? and past Director for Gender Equality at #UNESCO, truly raised my awareness. Take a moment to understand the broader social impact of the seductive female persona of our popular AI assistants. It is presented in her research under the title "I’d blush if I could", published at unesco.org.
Serife Seda Kucor, founder of PeriVision, showcased her incredible medical device using virtual reality goggles to diagnose and monitor glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. This device saves time, money, and improves patient comfort. Given the vast unmet medical need globally and the portability of this device, a major cause of blindness could be better diagnosed, monitored, and treated everywhere.
Big shoutout to Enriqueta Vallego-Yagüe, pharmacoepidemiologist at BIHAM, for shedding light on gender influences on health data. Awareness of these influences is crucial when applying AI to big data.
This event was part of a series open to innovators interested in entrepreneurship, organized by the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research and the Center for AI in Medicine. Feeling grateful for the opportunity to attend! #innovation #startup.
